OFFICIAL 390/40 Motor Yacht Thread

Does anyone have the mattress # off the HMC tag on the mattress?
Thanks

Bottom of mattress on one end or the other.
Thanks
It will be hand written on the tag

Hello, this is my first post. I hope to upgrade from a 30’ Cutwater to a SR 390/40 MY as soon as I find one, preferably in California so I don’t need to ship it by land. I single hand the 30’ quite often. Does anyone here have experience single hand the MY? What procedure do you use to dock and undock? Thank you.

i have the opportunity to buy a 2003 390MY with Cummins 480 CE diesel. I’m aware of the dropped valve problem with this engine when run hard. It has 350 hrs total and kept in salt water since 2003. Very low hours over 18 years so is that a concern and what could go wrong. I will off cause have a survey done but like to know if the low engine hours is a problem before spending the money for that. Any info is appreciated.

Low engine hours is certainly a warning flag but whether or not there are any real problems can only be known through inspection. I would think of the low engine hours as a risk that needs to be mitigated by as much diligence as possible. So, in addition to a regular surveyor (unless he/she is qualified on diesels), you're going to need to bring in someone who can do a thorough assessment of the state of the engines. There have been times when one could walk away from a boat only based on hours and easily find another but in this market, as I am guessing you know, might not come along any time soon.

Thanks for your reply Al. I like the QSB engine as you have a lot better that the 480CE. I think they started offering those in 2006 or 2007. Right now the seller wants about $220.000 which I think is high given the risk about the engines.

Wow. That is way above what I have been thinking my boat is worth, although that was before the recent run-up in prices.

I agree Alnav, but my 2004 gasser sold at 157k and there is no doubt we could have got another 20k in my opinion pretty easy. Depending on condition and if the 480CE's have been fixed or not price may drive me away from it.

Was the model years of the 40MY (not the 390MY) from 2006-2007, or was there a 2008 as well?

Was the Cummins QSB engine introduced with the 40, as opposed to the 480CE in the 390?

Thank you.

There definitely was a 2008 as I have one. I don't think many were produced, however. According to the spec sheets at the SeaRay website, the QSB-425 was only available starting with the 2007. It's possible 2006 was a transition year as I have heard of 2006's with QSB-425's.

Thanks Al. Do you have an opinion on pros and cons on the 480CE (I know the valve issue) vs the QSB engines.

I haven't owned a 480 engine but have had older Cummins engines, so I'm a little light on actual knowledge of the 480CE. But, here's a stab:
480CE Pros
-More power so higher top-end speed.
-Less electronic (but still some) to break.
480CE Cons
-Overpropping (can be related to the valve issue) so you probably know about this.
-Smokes at idle and much more exhaust residue (not sure of this but typical of older diesels).
-Adds about 1000lbs of weight so less efficiency

QSB Pros
-Lighter and more efficient.
-Never smokes and is quiet at idle.
-Reliable. Despite more complexity, this engine doesn't seem to have many problems that I have seen and I have had none.
QSB Cons
-WOT speed may be less than the 480CE. Not sure of cruise speed difference.
Lighter and may be prone to over-propping. (But have not seen this as a problem on the 40MY)
-Cooling system may be more fragile. If problems occur, this is the likely place. Keeping up with aftercooler maintenance is a must.

Hope this helps.

Al, thank you for your detailed reply. Much appreciated and will take into consideration. My preference would be a 07/08 40 MY (QSB, 2 single seats and a sofa).

A quick check on YachtWorld has a couple for sale in Florida right now. Have you checked those out at all?

I did see them but I’m in California, so a little worried about transporting them out here. I know the top has to come off and possibly other stuff for road transport. Other option is by boat to Mexico and then drive it by water the rest of the way to LA. Not many of them on the west coast unfortunately.

thats it, thank you
i just got my custom mattress from HMC. My old mattress was missing the tag. Each mattress tag # is linked to a certain serial number boat. I patterned my mattress and I couldn;t be happier. Got a 9 1/2 inch. Sweet.
