Cleaning things up in the engine room I discovered there is a type of air filter installed on the Caterpillar 3208 turbo diesel air intake. Earlier I had asked my local marina shop about replacement air filter elements and they said those engines don't normally have air filters.
The filter is marked Walker Engineering PN 1C01C94 and says to clean at 250 hours and replace at 500 hours. I can't find anything about this filter on their website, but sent them a request for information.
My question to the forum is should there be an air filter element in use or not on these engines? Is anyone out there using air filters on the Cats? If so, make and model please.
Any experience out there as far as good idea, bad idea, observations on performance, etc.?
Thank you all in advance. I have have come to really appreciate this forum.

Your engines apparently have Walker AirSeps installed on them. The AirSep is a crankcase venting system that routes crankcase blow-by to an air filter housing containing a turbine design to separate out the oil from the vent fumes and drain the oil back into the engine's oil pan. The Airsep uses K&N filters......a small one on the crankcase vent and a much larger one on the intake.

Walker also sells a high performance air filter system for 3208's without the CCV recirculation feature:

Replacement filters are available from Walker Engineering and if yours are not too far gone, they can be cleaned using a K&N filter cleaning kit available at most auto parts stores.

Thank you! I have the one in the second link. Had to order the K&N cleaner from Advance auto, but it works great! Tried it on one and I can actually see light through the filter now. I have to get to the boat and install it and grab the other one. Repeat. Rinse, etc.
