Official Aftica Stereo Install thread...

This is what I got when I tried watching Scott:

Then I tried tapping on the YouTube link & nada! I'm really starting to dislike this phone.....not to mention that all the pics I upload from it lately are blurry!

Well, this week has been one Heck of a learning curve for me... I have finally purchased my speakers... 6.5's, 1" tweeters, 10" sub. I am still on the hunt for the MHD900/5 but we're getting closer! I learned something else interesting and others may need this information as well...

FUSION 700 series to NMEA2000

If you would like to hook your Stereo up to a NMEA2000 network there are a plethora of options on the drop cables and which one you are supposed to use. There are different ones for the AV700i and the IP700. And there is a difference if you already have a dedicated network or if you are going to put one in for this specific operation. Yes, my head was spinning by the time I was done...

For the IP700 and AV700 this is the cable you need to hook into a already dedicated NMEA2000 Network.

Fits together nicely but I was worried it may pull apart.

Problem solved...

After that I started my next little bit... I am installing a dedicated Volt meter for the stereo system. I didn't want the display to be on 24/7 and be a drain on the system... So here's my solution.

Had to break out my trusty Weller... (felt pretty good to use it as it's been awhile)

Soldered all of the connections

Then I shrunk wrapped over them too...

Finished Display board..

Finished switch

Here's the Loom as it sits now

And it works...

I have to leave the spade connectors bare until I instal the I will shrink wrap the whole thing and make it nice.

I'll update everyone when I get the AMP so I can finally start building my board!

Your going to lose a knot with all the added weight.

Maybe he can point his subwoofer aft and pick that knot back up with the "thumping:

Jim, thanks for your help with everything. I ordered my speakers from you. I hate you couldn't get my amp but as of today I got it handled...Thanks Joe!

Great start Jason and good luck.

I will second the "Get a Jig Saw" as mentioned earlier in this thread.

***LOUD TRUMPETS AND APPLAUSE PLEASE***
The amp is in the house!

Thanks to Joe (Havana Shamrock) I have the amp in my hands...

He put me in contact with this place!

Ask for Brett. Super nice guy and treated me right for sure. Since I don't live in NY he mailed it to me and even price matched the price that I found it for on line. He couldn't have done any better. (He is busy and hard to get a hold of but well worth it)

JL MARINE STUFF Call = (718)651-6542 ASK for Brett!

Here's a perspective...

900w from this small package that will fit nicely into my spot that I have picked out and will deliver 100w to each of my 7.7's and my 1" tweeters and super charge the JL 10'' subs. Stay tuned headed to the boat this weekend and I hope to get something going now!

One of the installation aspects I have found out with race cars and high performance boats is not to solder wires. They become more susceptible to breaking at the soldered joints. Where the wires are soldered he wire has no flex. With the bouncing and jarring the boats are subjected to I have found that a well crimped joint holds up better. Just saying that's all.

Thanks Doug,

I only soldered the very end of the wire after it had been crimped. I did this solely for the purpose of guaranteeing the connection would be made and would keep corrosion at bay in the circuit. Thanks for the heads up though.

There goes Jason giving out my contacts ! Haha your welcome pal. I'm following your install to see if I did anything wrong. Now let's get some tunes pumping!!!

Hey, when the guy's good he deserves business... Enjoy your treat:thumbsup:

Scott, I'm ready to have something to show for this pile of parts I have in my den...lol

***Update***
Well spent a few hours yesterday toying around with the boat. I learned an awful lot about myself and the boat...

1st got all the systems fixed up and Jess got all of the bedding and "women's" stuff on board then I went to work.

Replaced all the lights with LED's

Mounted the stereo dedicated battery mounted under the salon seat.

Some pictures of my steps...

Before...

After...

Did learn some great information that I was unaware of...
I have a poly water tank instead of the standard aluminum that everyone else is having issues with leaking.

This is not a nice space for a large 6' man to try and get into...

but it's in after shaving the corners to squeeze it through the small opening.

here's how it sits inside of the access panel..

The amp will be mounted to the new amp board inside of the cubby hole. I started to drill holes to run the 4 gauge amp wire but both of my cordless drills fizzled out before I got very far. So, I am going back up Thursday to wax/ paint and drop in the water GOOD Friday. Fingers crossed once in the water this will go quickly.

The other goodies that will be happening this week is I have a marina putting in a B150M Airmar chirp Transducer for the new Garmin 741xs. Jess just bought me a new Standard Horizon GX2200 VHF with AIS for my birthday . So I will have to add this to my network when I get to that point. Seems like my list is getting longer not shorter. Well really wish I had a better update but it's started and I am ready to make some more progress soon. I'll keep everyone here updated as I GO!

Thanks for looking!

+++UPDATE+++

Well I wish I had more to share... We went up last thursday to get Aftica ready to splash so we didn't do much on the stereo stuff for a few days.

As some of you may or may not know we needed to put in a new transducer before we splashed this year...

Old

New

Ready to Go!

Hull wax and paint complete...

I am always amazed every year when I wax my 1989 boat how well she still shines!

Now on to the stereo part...

The only thing I got accomplished with this is a piece of grey conduit run along the inside wall to the bilge and a few of the necessary network cables and 4 gauge ± cables for the battery. I also attached the 60 amp breaker but I don't have a picture of that yet. (I do plan on sealing around the pipe very well in the same fashion that Sea Ray did from the factory)

Now on the the BUMBER!

I was going to set the gains on the amp before I put it in it's final resting place inside of the bulkhead... Well...
She's DOA! It will be a few weeks shipping it back to NY then on to FL then let JL look it what the issue is. I had been shown other posts on another boating forum showing different problems with this am but there wasn't many and I had my heart set on what this amp would produce. I can get power to the amp but the indicator lamp lights up flashes green maybe 5 seconds turns red then back to green once more then shuts off. I have already contacted Brett in NY and JL in Florida. Pretty difficult road thus far with JL.

On a Positive,
I did receive the rest of my speakers from BOE and have them loaded up and ready to take to the lake this weekend. Not sure what I'll get accomplished but I may try to go ahead and get the speakers in so all I have to do is connect them to the amp. We will see what shakes down I still have a lot to do and many more items to put in before this project will be finished. I did pick up my Standard Horizon GX2200 last weekend and I have to get my 741XS on order soon. I am about ready for it. I also have to make a list of all the electronics for the insurance company with the total cost. Really not looking forward to having to add everything up. Thanks for looking everyone and I'll update when I have something positive.

Jason,
I'm sorry to hear about your amp, that's a real bummer. I hope that they turn it around quick so you can blast some of those "trippy" tunes! Lol
Best of luck with the turn around & keep us posted. I hope that I don't get the same results when I install mine!!!

Thanks Guys!

Well JL has actually been very helpful. I have had multiple emails and phone calls talking to many people about how to handle the amp. I have a list of a few things to try and if that doesn't work they are going to send me to a local audio place that they will have bench test the amp and see exactly what is going on. If that fails they will get a replacement to me ASAP! So maybe there will be a rainbow after all!

I have 3 JL Amps and no worries and have never heard of any other problems till now, I'm sorry to hear your having problems with yours, and hope you get it sorted soon. I can honestly say I don't know anyone with a wet sounds system so I can't comment on their equiptment all I can say is anyone who listens to my JL stuff is, holy s**t its so clear and loud !!! I love it!!!! Best of luck Jason!!

Well, here's a little update from this past weekend!

Thanks to the help of JL audio technical staff and my local Tune Town audio place the amp is turning on and should be working! The light turns green and stays green! So YES! Pretty happy about that. All we could come up with is there was a block in the grounding caused by the battery isolator. As soon as I hard wired the stereo batt directly to the port starting battery she worked perfectly. I don't know, not going to question it, but what they had me try worked.

I did get a few things accomplished.

1st.
I went ahead and swapped out the rear cabin speakers...

My hat goes off to Marinebeam.com for the LED lights. I wish that I had switched them years ago.. good stuff!

While swapping out the interior speakers I went ahead and labeled the wires accordingly. They are described in the owners manual but there is no rhyme or reason unless you specifically look it up in the manual.

The amp was mounted on the board.

The power supply was also put into place.

New breaker and indicator lights for the 120v panel for the power supply/charger.

I also replaced a few of the others that were blinking or burnt out completely... now they all work again!

Now the big part... I got the head unit back into its home...

This was a 30 minute job that took 3 hours!

I have the Av700 head unit which is also a DVD player. I wanted to tie the rca video outs to the existing coax system I had installed previously. I purchased a RF modulator and put it inline of my existing coax set up and then plugged in the video feed as well as the output for channel 4 on the head unit. When I did a dry run to see if I could control the TV sound and have a good picture... well... epic fail.... We had snow and a rolling screen. I felt like I was back in the days of bunny ears again! After tracing wires and redoing connectors I cut off the factory end of the new RCA brand coax and put my own on just like the others in the boat. VOILA! problem solved! the factory end was crap and gave me all kinds of issues and I practically ripped out every thing else trying to determine where the problem was. So after a few trips to the local hardware store and some foul language we had everything working as I wanted it too.

I got the stereo in place got the antenna amplifier and the router put back into place and have the RF modulator plugged in inside of the cubby.

That was basically all the time I had for the weekend as I had to leave early and do the family thing because it was my 30th birthday on Sunday and my family would have been less then happy if I hadn't spent some of it with them. Stay tuned as there's more goodies to come and thanks for stopping in and we are making progress!

Just for fun I saw this little guy Friday in our harbor!
