Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

When I start this project.. ( after hurricane season in case I need to move her) I will look at all items that can be done.. I am so embarrassed by the engine room right now.. plan on repairing gel coat damage and recoat with bilge coat ( would love to do in alwgrip white) paint the long exhaust tubes.. replace hoses and clamps 6inch stuff.. add strip LED lighting for more coverage and light

not sure on the genny yet I do want to go to a larger muffler for sure. But cleaning and painting the genny looks tough to do correct...
probably start in Nov when service is due on all the engines...

My genny has some rust, but I worried about painting as well, as the worst of it is on the govenor section. I wire brushed as much as I could, and ospho'd the rust to stop degredation. While not pretty, it does look better, and most imprtantly still functions. I think a paint job would require removal to do well/right.

Unless you like huffing paint fumes!!

I been trying to understand something I heard a while back. Cat recommends going to a straight weight oil due to the fact that it clogs the aftercooler? What I'm Missing. i know the oil gets pumped around the turbos bearings.

Can someone please explain

I just do what I'm told and I use straight 30w for my climate. It's the additives they use to blend the various weights together that cause problems baking onto the turbo from what limited knowledge I have. FW will chime in and give you facts...

In order to make oil change viscosities from 15W to 40W and back to 15W the oil must become thicker or thinner and the oil manufacturers achieve that bit of magic by adding viscosity enhancers to the additive package they put in multi-viscosity oil. Caterpillar determined that the viscocity enhancers break down and get baked onto the passages in the air side of the after coolers because Cat uses a crankcase fume recycling system that sends oil laden blow-by fumes back into the intake air stream where they get heated and baked onto the after cooler passages.

End of SAEO ??

My buddy and I both have 3126s. He tried to buy SAEO-30 this week and the local distributor said that CAT is no longer making it. Has anyone else heard this? I am from Ontario Canada, and the local province-wide distributor for CAT is Toromont.

UPDATE:
CAT confirms SAEO-30 is discontinued. I received the below text from CAT when I questioned their recommendation to use their 10W30 oil. The tech that I spoke with reached out to their lubrication group and other for an explanation. Here is what I received.

Description: Hello DSN,
Attached document show that up until recently, SAEO 30 or 40 was the only oil to be used in 3116 & 3126 marine engines. It is also stated in SEBU6164, O&M, fluid recommendations for this engine. It is also well known by customers who own these. Now those oils are being discontinued and the attached IRM states to use multi-grade oil instead. Something that the other documents state will be harmful to these engines. Can the product group explain what oil can be used in these engines now and is there supporting documentation that states it will not cause issues?

What is your Question:

Resolution: The history here is important to understand when expressing risk. The 3126 and 3116 marine engines were the first CAT engines to use sea water after coolers. The initial cooler designs were prone to fouling due the viscosity improvers in the multi-grade oils at that time (API rated CF engine oils). CF Multi grade Diesel Engine oils were introduced in 1994 and the API (American Petroleum Institute) has stated they will no longer certify CF rated oils and the rating is considered obsolete. API rated engine oils with the CF rating were replaced by API CH rated engine oils in 1998 for example. Currently the API rating for Multi grade Diesel Engine oils is at the CK rating. The 3126 commercial production engine has long been retired and after cooler designs have evolved significantly in subsequent years. Sea water after coolers are on most of our diesel marine engines running multi-grade oils. The changes in additives (i.e. viscosity improvers) used in engine oils and the formulations have improved to the point that using the Multi grade oils recommended for the application in IRM PELJ2736 will not affect the engines.
SEBU 6251 takes time to update, and the fluids group here at CAT need to have substantial amount of changes to warrant the time it takes to do a rev change to the engine fluid manuals (SEBU6250, SEBU6251), that will lag any IRM on fluid changes but the manuals will be updated and that portion on SAEO removed.
I also attached the part numbers for their multi-viscosity oil replacement recommendation. The last 3 part numbers are recommended for 10W30 applications.

FYI DEO=Diesel Engine Oil, and ULS=Ultra Low Sulfur.

tks

Dave

When you are all practiced up come do mine too?

Frank recommended Rotella T1 years ago and that’s what I have used for 10 years. I purchase it from Walmart every year and now do Walmart Online for convenience. Works like a charm and change it every year. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shell-Ro...FBmIYjEyR4nFOxp0w5hoC_c0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

hm I just bought 15 gallons but I thought it was odd that it was $4 cheaper per gallon than last year. I’ll ask my local Milton and see if they say the same thing

It is still available but some local dealers don't stock it because it is very slow moving. I buy my Cat parts off the water in Middle Tennessee and their answer was simply that the required purchase minimum was a pallet full. Sorry, I don't mind inventorying some parts, but that is a bit excessive.

That makes sense. My local Milton said I was the first to order marine 3126 turbos from them for as long as they could remember. Not many larger diesel boats in our area, but Milton has been great about getting stuff shipped in for free to their location and I go pick it up

Cat only recommended single viscosity oil or SAEO for the 3116 and 3126 marine engines. I think the correct oil for 3196 marine engines is Cat DEO (diesel engine oil) 15w-40 but you can probably use Rotella T 15W-40

Here is the Caterpillar publication on fluids: SEBU6250-21

Thanks Frank. I have been using the Rotella T4 15W-40 so we are good. Just wanted to confirm with the expert. Thanks for the fluid publication, lots of good info in there.
