Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

I had a tight cutless bearing once. It took a wrench to move the prop/shaft at the trans coupler, but it did not effect engine performance at all. FYI, it was not an alignment issue, just a bad cutless bearing. Changed it, problem gone.

I totally in agreement with you, Larry.

If your engine makes 3000RPMs at no-load, you checked off throttle linkage, governor setting and the HP pump rack reaching WOT. All of these do not indicate adequate fuel supply during the load.

Lots to check there... so once I get back in the water with the new cutlass bearings, I'll get those items checked. They are outside my comfort (and equipment) zone. Plus, there's no way I can eyeballs on the port side throttle linkage...

Get a decent size mirror with a handle or a steel mirror that has a hole in it for hanging with string or ??. I use one in the ER all the time for looking where I can't stick my noggin.

I use the camera on the phone at the end of my arm either in photo or video mode, and snap pictures/videos that I can then study.

I do that often as well. Tough to do that while trying to work the throttle.

I'm confused. Don't you have large access panels in the salon to access the linkage from the top? 420/44DB has similar setup, PORT is the difficult side, but I have no issue getting to it from the top, with the port panel opened.

the sofa doesn’t allow the panel to open the full way.

You can figure it out. I have same boat and same engines. I've adjusted my port idle. I've removed and re-installed fuel cooler connecting hoses. I've changed impeller. I've even replaced the seawater pump. You can get more access to throttle by removing air pipe between aftercooler and engine.

Yes, I can figure it out. There’s a lot I can figure out. And a lot I can do. I pick and choose what I do based on time, money and other factors. Port side engine work is something I choose to contract out.

Curious as to how you can tell its time to replace your airseps? Have read 3-4 years but are their tell tale signs when visually inspecting? Just ordered a set as mine still looks a bit "dark" in some areas after cleaning.

Roger that. I understand that. I guess I assumed you were thinking of doing it yourself. I'm the same way with parts of the boat as well (running gear and hull gelcoat, for example). I hire that stuff out.

When the filter is black and you are putting out black smoke, it's definitely time. Ask me how I know. Ha!

Seriously I think Walker says every 250 hours or so. I have two sets and just clean and rotate them through in pairs annually, since I usually put 200-250 hours on in a year.

Isn't that when they are serviced? Isn't there a point where they can no longer be cleaned and should be replaced?

I need to double check. But I think Dave at Walker told me every 250 hours and up to three cleanings, then replace them. I know the factory originals that I inherited when I bought the boat clogged up at right about 1000 hours and cleaning didn't help.

Well...looking at the new and the old (which was cleaned and oiled) looked like it was time..lol

I am finally getting around to tackling my leaky SMX seawater pump. I removed it today. Naturally it was on the hard to access port engine. You can see where water has been running out of the bottom weep hole. I called Seaboard Marine and the walked me through the seal replacement process. They said to wear gloves and not get any hand oils on the seal. They said if you run in shallow sandy water that can cause failure at this stage. He said the commercial guys that run all the time get 8,000 hours out of them without failure. I’ll post the process when I do it.
