Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

I am not a believer that we should be changing the oil every year when we are boating 6 months and storing 6 months and putting on between 50 and a 100 hours. I do it but reluctantly.
This new filter is rated for 1,000 hours and removes 72% of particles less than 10 micron. The LF9009 is nothing less then 30 micron I believe.
I could see leaving the new filter in there for two years and maybe just changing the oil once a year..... albeit reluctantly.

Filters aside, I think one of the reasons we (or at least I) change the oil each season is to get out any moisture that accumulates in the system from condensation over that time. While the oil probably doesn’t break down with those low hours, moisture does gather. For me, it’s not just about engine hours.

For those that take oil samples, you will find little to no reason to change your oil on just one season with 50-100 hrs. The numbers don't lie.

$29 is about $40 cdn. Cummins selling them here for $65 cdn!

We certainly don't have the sourcing options here that you guys have. Where did you find them for $29? maybe when the border opens up I'll be able to pick up a few.

I found them for that price in the USA on amazon. So I ordered them. Two weeks later, after a couple delays in shipment, they canceled my order. I had to pay $70 (US) for a 2 pack. Fortunately, free shipping.

Been reading through all the threads here --- GREAT INFO!

Are all of the parts interchangeable from the 6CTA and the engines I have (480CE's)?? Based on what I've read, the only difference is the electronics on the engine?

So despite having changed the air sep and breather filters i'm still popping the small vacuum indicator attached to the breather tube. What should I check next?

You can try a new indicator. It has worked for me in the past.

Irie, just curious as to the condition when this happens? low/high speed? when the indicator pops, does it stay red so it is noticeable afterwards?
Can't help you with your question ... made me think it is a good thing to look for when doing my engine checks (assuming it stays red) - hadn't thought to consider it. Will follow the responses.

Cheers,

Anyone?

From what I’ve read and seen when we were boat shopping exact same motor with addition of the electronics.

Just seeing this reply. Have only noticed this on my last two runs at diff speeds. It stays red until you depress the reset button. Going to inspect the breather tube this winter. May replace and see how it does next season. I check them now definitely part of my ER checks now. This is the motor that registered 0 oil pressure on a return trip this summer. No other issues since so I’ve been going over everything on the motor to ensure no restrictions.

Yes, I thought so too. Just don't see how they gained any horsepower just with electronics LOL.

I agree, my boat is gas but my farm tractors r diesel. Never change it due to off season unless the hrs call for it. If your running ur engine to temp it keeps the condensation down, regardless of new oil or old in my opinion . Even on my 8.1 merc’s in the boat I don’t change until spring. Then I am off to a good start.

Where do you see a $1,000?.... and what is so troublesome with the current Walker system?

Never had a problem with mine. From memory, I thought they were pricey.
