Official Cummins 6cta 450C thread

I had a similar situation a couple years ago. Filled up and ran for about 6hrs. Near the end it seemed like the engines sounded different, hard to describe. The next day I pulled the filters and they were loaded with black crap. I treat my fuel every fill, was certain I hadn't caused the problem. Change filters again after burning another couple hundred gallons, everything went back to normal.

I just assumed you had dual racers, no vacuum gauge makes me assume now that you have a single so just change the filters (racor and engine) and go from there.

Pretty sure he has dual racors but does not have the vacuum gauges on them.

My starboard fuel primer started leaking a few years ago when I plunged it. I finally replaced it. Here’s the new one installed with the Bosch part number stamped on it, should anyone need to do this. Uses 17mm wrench. Easily found googling the part number online. Around $20 I think.

Did you have to do anything special to replace it, other than flipping off the fuel flow valve at the Racors?

See this post and the one following it regarding boost gauge.

I rebuilt both my turbos recently. Rust buildup on inside of turbine housing restricted boost and spooling parts were generally worn. You could remove both engines air filters and spin each compressor blade by hand. See if they both spin with the same freedom. You would need to remove exhaust elbow to see inside turbine housing. Sometimes that's hard to do without cutting off the four bolts as they can be rusted up pretty good.

When is last time aftercoolers were pulled and disassembled and the air side cleaned?
Reviving an old post - Where did you have your turbos rebuilt ?

Since purchase about 5 years ago I've had a very small trace amount of potassium in the star oil sample. This has stayed the same year after year. Blackstone says no need to take action as its very small (14 ppm) specially since it has stayed the same year after year. Other elements found with AF are also normal so can't say for sure that the potassium is due to AF. Curious if anyone else has similar readings.

Mine have been either 4,5,or 6 in all the tests over the last 9 years, and 2700 hours.
If they say don’t worry about it, I wouldn’t. As I have said here before. They are twins, they are alike but have their own personalities (within reason).

Am I the only one that finds $100 for the aftercooler service o-rings from Seaboard a bit expensive?

Ok, I'm going to have to retract what I mentioned above. So from Cummins the same kit is $70.83 per cooler (part# 3919853). If you get the full kit which includes bolts and stabilizers its $500.28 per cooler (part #4025341).

... Most racors have a vacuum guage on the top and some have a tee-tale that will mark how high the suction was on the racors.

This is not something that comes from the factory, unless ordered as an option. It's common as an aftermarket installation. If an owner didn't install them, you shouldn't expect them.

Anyone mind sharing their setup for pressure testing the after coolers? Pulled mine this weekend and they look to be in great shape but want to pressure test after reassembling.

I posted mine earlier in this thread. Cap off both water pipes with 1 1/2” rubber end cap for pvc piping. Shraeder valve in one zinc hole. Gauge in other zinc hole. I bought 1/4” threaded gauge and valve online and a couple of 1/2” to 1/4” bushings.

EZ question.....oil pressure sender. Is it a common sender for both the bridge and on engine mounted oil pressure gage?
