Official Cummins QSC-500 Thread

Need to do an oil change... what oil is best for these motors? I always used shell rotella in my cats, what do these like?

I have always run Shell Rotella 15w-40 in boats and trucks. Ran it in the QSCs in the 44 and running it now in our 6CTAs. Run the same in diesel generators. Run the 30w in the transmissions. Never an issue and oil analysis have always come back great. Also have a lot of friends that are Shell people. I am sure the Valvoline is also a great oil. Might come down to a personal preference between the two….

Ditto on the Shell Rotella, I doubt anyone could come up with empirical data that would suggest there is a tangible difference in the oils that meet the industry rating standards. If there were oils out there that caused problems or to keep out of the engines, it would be widely disseminated by now.
In the aircraft oil world I’ve seen articles about which oils with which additives provided the best corrosion protection and the results were compelling, I’ve not seen the same for Diesel marine engine oil though.

WIF : Water In Fuel
Check your racors

Which Fleetguard antifreeze do I need?
I checked the color of coolant it’s green.

Consider Fleetguard ES Compleat.
Your coolant filter should supplement the coolant with the appropriate SCA so you don't need any further supplement in the coolant.

Ok silly question here… if I replace the fuel filters on the engine how do I prime them? On my previous boat with Cats it had a pump on the filter block to re-prime the system. How do I do this on Cummins?

I will get lambasted here, but for the 4-years I owned them, I very carefully filled them with clean fresh diesel from a clean gallon milk jug and never had an issue. I was schooled by a very prominent member here on doing this. The “book” method is to turn the key on your electrical panel on and flip the switch on the keypad on/off until they are primed. I think it takes quite a while. Someone will chime in I am sure.

bb I do the same as you. Fill the new filters to the top with fresh diesel, have been doing it for 6 years never had a problem.

Not on a common rail diesel. Follow the instructions in the manual and use the electric pump to prime the filter. A piece of grit too small to see can stick an injector open and cause catastrophic engine damage. It only takes a few minutes to do it properly, so why take the risk?

Totally agree with this.

The process is fit the on-engine filter dry (just lubricate the gasket with fresh fuel).

To prime turn ignition to on (do not crank) and the lift pump will run for about 15 seconds then shut off, turn off ignition for 15-20 seconds and then back on. Repeat about 20 times (probably only takes 10 but you will loose count!). If it doesn't fire off in two seconds of cranking stop and repeat process.

It helps only replacing the on-engine and not the on-engine and racor at the same time.

I agree that switching to Fleetguard ES Compleat is the best choice, but there are no coolant filters on the QSC500!

Lift pump - what lift pump?
