Hey all,

I thought this needed to be in it's own posting.

ODOT for account is 503-373-0000
After you have your account number call A Work Safe Services 503-391-9363

You will need the tow vehicle VIN, GVWR, Make & Model, unit number and width of load. $8 a year or by the 10 day. They do not give info so if you have questions, you have to ask. I was told all answers to questions will be included with the maps and attachments.

If you plan to drive other than state or fed highways, you will need to call each county to file for permits in said counties. This only applies to annual permits. A 10 day will have directions that have to be followed and county permits will be figured in. So, I live two miles off of one highway and 6 miles off another, I will need to call two counties to get permits in both to drive my road. But if I was driving through Salem headed to Detroit Lake, I would not need a permit to pull through down town as it is considered a state highway.

Along with the permit they will send maps of go-no go roads within the state along with maps of width limits for some roads and day and time limits for roads. This attachment needs to be read very carefully as it can be very confusing. And the times are dependent on the width of the towed load and length. At a total length of 57' I am good for most roads during "daylight hours". Again read carefully.

The fastest I have ever received anything from the state was the permits. From call to having in hand was three days. An all time new record.

I will see if I can get the guy down the road from me will come give me any tips or needed advise for a private load. He is an Oregon State Trooper.

I was going to scan the documents but with all the personal info in the permit, I decided to leave those out. And the maps are pretty big and won't scan without a large format scanner.

Any questions, just ask.

John

I'm still waiting on mine, I applied on the 23rd. In my waiting, I have decided to give my local upholstery shop a second look. The one I was going to take it to in Portland has moved to Mossy Rock, just lost the sales tax advantage. Plus he's absolutely terrible in getting back to me.
They didn't ask me the GVWR, but I'm pretty sure they can get that from the vin.

They asked for the annual permit. And for both the trailer and the pick up. I have read that the pick up is only 16k but know of folks towing 20k+ with no problems.

I talked to one in McMinnville and he wanted $5000 to do the side panels, motor cover, replace the seats and a top to go from the windshield to the stern of our 19' boat. I replaced the seats from Overton's and did the sides and motor cover myself. Cost us $200 for all the materials and I dusted off my upholstery tools from 15 years ago. Next time I rino line the floor, I'll be using white over the black. That floor gets hot, I'm told. Still can't find a top we want.

On the renewal of the permit. If you received the form attached, it doesn't apply to us. I was told to toss it.

Anybody want the maps for Oregon? I have last years that only had the date changed on them. Along with the attachments required. They have all the regulations in the attachments.

So, some new laws are in effect for Oregon.

They are only putting the trailer "tree" plates on trailers under 8200lbs. For over that, you must have a "Heavy Trailer" plate. And that makes it necessary to have the tow unit registered "Truck". If not there is a very heavy fine. And here is where the state bends you over. A tow unit with a carry weight of;
14,001-16,000 $655
16,001-18,000 $718
18,001-20,000 $801
20,001-22,000 $864
22,001-24,000 $949
24,001-26,000 $1031
These registration fees will be going up at the end of this year, as informed by the DMV. This is their way of removing large pick ups from the roads. And the fees for gas powered cars is changing as well. They said it will be based on year and miles per gallon of fuel used.

The truck plates for my tow unit are (16,001-18,000) $718 per year. The tree plate is $186 for two years. There is a "way around" for this. The local DMV will issue a 10 day permit for over weight vehicles at $10. The state DOT is unaware of these permits. And they are necessary for any vehicle pulling a trailer with the "Tree" plates. Tree plates are only good for a Gross Combination Weight of 9200lbs. Any vehicle with a combined load weight of the 9200lbs is subject to the "over weight" fines. This makes owning a travel trailer or horse trailer illegal from the get go.

I was informed that the state isn't looking "hard" at it right now, but will be very soon. And that a yearly over dimension AND overweight is not something they will issue to private parties. Only through a business.
