You giving them a facelift or installing different type?

What’s the plan?

Solid wood I'm thinking cherry to match the rest of the wood in the cabin. The worn out carpet had to go.

You worried the surface could be slick when wet?

Here's what I have planed non slip

When I did my steps on my last boat, I epoxy coated them. It was nice, but a bit slippery with wet feet, so I glued on some edging from Home Depot. Not elegant, but it worked really well. I was going to try to router some grooves and do rubber inserts, but went with this a trial, and it worked.

Maybe you can add a little grit to the last coat of finish for the wood? I have solid wood steps are are finished in a matte varnish. They have what feels like a fine grit mixed in to the top coat of varnish and they are not slippery. It's basically invisible, but running your hand over it feels like there's a layer of very fine sand sprinkled on it.

Not a closeup, but this is what it looks like.

This is not a great photo, but the steps are finished in a mat low gloss poly which is fairly slip resistant. Small groves are cut into the surface of the teak to increase the coefficient of sliding friction. You have to look carefully to see the cuts. This works well and is a very esthetic solution to slips and falls.

The steps without the skateboard tape certainly look much better. Looks like you guys solved the safety issue as well.

The steps in my 280 are living on borrowed time with these ideas. Thanks.

Ash should be good. Very hard so shouldn't dent very easily. The open grain seals up well with an epoxy coating.

I live only 5 miles from Amish country 45 minute drive from a great place called Keim Lumber It's a real lumber store that still sells domestic and exotic wood plus a mill shop. All the ash set me back only $77 already sized to 3/4". Here a picture of one of the top steps with a 1/4 round edge ready to go up to the boat to fit it around to support tube. I don't trust the old step Sea Ray relied on the carpet to cover up all the big gaps. IMG_20200322_110749855_HDR.jpg

Looks really nice. Will be a massive improvement on carpet. Really giving me the itch. Flooring and steps definitely on my to-do list.

I can't take credit for last years new Plasteak flooring . Because we added a 1/2" sub floor for under the new flooring and the boats 2 hours away I had someone do the job. But the steps are right in my wheel house and it doesn't hurt that I have a decent wood shop .
