so I am also wandering if this old 1968 srv 185 has the rubber impellors and boats do. I am afraid to take apart and look at stuff without knowing parts numbers. My original manual doesn't say anything about them or have them listed in parts list. I think I know where they should be on new styles or most merc engines and outdrives. Just not even sure where to find info, been looking at alot of things

A '68 Mercruiser "should" have the old reliable Alpha 1 outdrive which would have a rubber impeller. There's lots of parts houses out there in addition to the well-known internet sales outlets, but you'll need to use the outdrive's serial number to verify you get the correct part. 'Figure around $35-$45 for a rebuild kit for your pump, or about half if just needing the impeller alone.

Thank you. I did just learn where to find the kit. I also was thinking that the motor on this boat does not have an impeller, and it's TRUE it has a water pump similar to a car pump. So I did get the outdrive kit for the impeller. Also glad ronk ow it's the alpha 1. Much trouble finding g solid info in all my searches. I have alot to learn about this classic. Thanks for replying

Morning,

The owner’s manual and a service manual are very different things in that a service manual will tell you what you have as in year, model etc. but will thoroughly explain repair procedures and parts needed.

Once you have that info and your serial numbers, searching for parts gets simpler.

There are many online sources for parts. Your marina will have parts of course but you’ll needlessly spend extra on them.

As for the pumps, you have both. The pump in the drive brings water on board while the automotive style pump circulates it in the engine.
