Found this old girl that has been sitting up for about 10 years. Any advice?

Roll up your sleeves and open your wallet.

Just kidding. That looks like a worthwhile project. Got any photos of the interior and closeups of the hull?

Before I can offer any good advice, what are the particulars of the deal? What you pay up front would, for me, make the difference once I had a look all through the boat. As already asked, any additional pics would certainly help us help you.

I bought her for $500. All of the electronics in it work the hull is in great shape solid no soft spots. And all new fabric was in it for the interior. The engine needs a new water pump and the interior needs to be finished.

I think for $500, I would enjoy the hell out of that project. That is if I had a heated barn I could tinker in all winter.

I am going to make a makeshift barn around her. Just finished washing it. Can u tell the difference lol.

Is that a 228 305??

  • Go for it. My Sea Ray sat for 10 years too. Took a lot of work but it's now a good running boat. Definitely build some sort of barn or shelter around it. I didn't have that luxury. Wish I had.

Why did you spray paint it grey after you washed it? Just kidding. That's a heck of a difference and shows you what a little elbow grease can do.

I can see now why you already made the deal! My vote is cast!

By all means, great score and please keep us informed on the refit!

Also, that 228 is a 4 barrel Chevrolet engine, the 198 were 2 barrel, also offered back then was a 188 and 233 Ford blocks, 302 and 351 cubic inches, damn I'm old to remember that....lol

If you can clean it up, use the included fabric to recover the interior, get the motor running with just a water pump and then splash and enjoy it then you scored.
Congratulations!

Having just completed a restoration/refurb of a 1985 Cobalt I can offer some insight.

If you are "just going to fix it up and use it" or "really fix it up updating as you go" will make some differences in how you proceed. the first thing I will tell you is to allow for 3 times the amount of time you initially have figured and about 3 times the money. My boat was one I had owned in the pas so I knew it really well. My plan was to take a few months and put a couple of grand in to it and just use it. Now nearly 4 years and $22,000 later I'm 99.6% finished.

One other thing.... Don't expect too much in the way of performance. Those early '70s flybridge boats were/are heavy and that puny 233 HP is going to struggle to push that girl around.

Best of luck....
Shawn

My plan is to get the cabin and everything I can get redone this winter. Then use it over the summer. Then next winter change what ever I don't like. I am planning on upgrading everything as I go. As for the engine if it is not strong enough I may drop a 383 or a 496 in it.
