Mates,

We boat out of the Maumee River in Toledo and this year, with the kids getting a bit bigger, are looking to spend more full days out in Lake Erie. To anyone who boats in the western basin: are there good sand bars, swimming areas in Maumee Bay or along the Michigan coast?

How about the islands? We see lots of boats between the North and Middle Bass cut - primarily anchoring on the North Bass side (east end). Then there's the north side of Kelly's. and of course the big sandbar on the west side of the entrance into Sandusky bay. The latter would be a treat for them as you've got Cedar Point on the east end of Sandusky Bay.

Oh, definitely. Going to the islands or to CP is a real treat. I am just hoping to find a couple places somewhat nearer to our home port.

I thought there was an area at state park beach for that.Probably best to ask around locally. Its been a few years since i boated out of monroe area though.

You're right. Maumee Bay State Park is relatively near and is a nice spot to spend an afternoon.

It is a nice place overall, but the lakefront beach is disgusting! Dirty, gritty sand and pea gravel mixed with seagull poop.

They mitigated that with the nearby pond that has nice clean sand.

Yes, it's best to stay out in the lake and not actually use the beach

You might enjoy a ride up north to Sterling State park or Maumee Bay only so much to do on the muddy Maumee. You would really like Port Clinton area and East Harbor state park. Water is cleaner and lots of beaches.

Thanks! I'll put these spots on the list for this season.

Take a run up to the Detroit River. Its a Very beautiful and fun trip plus there are places inside the mouth of the river to anchor and hang out.
