Last week I decided to pull my elbow risers as the outer insulation was delaminating a bit. I called DeAngelo in Ft Lauderdale and he said bring them in for inspection Which meant replacement. Mine where rusted inside and I was told to expect 2000 hrs out of new ones these have 1500 hrs
I drove 3-1/2 hrs back and installed them the next day
Yesterday we took friends (CSR MEMBERS) our for the day and I just jumped up on plane 5 minutes in my wife yells “ we smell something weird” I also smelt it my buddy took the wheel I ran to the engine room opened the hatch and smoke filled the opening “oh boy” I jumped down to look around and found both new risers where smoking badly wish I had video
I yelled “hit the blowers bob” kinda figuring by now this may be normal to burn off the new coating well I called DeAngelo and the tech says yeah we get 2-3 calls per week like this I pretty much yelled at him “how about telling the customer this will happen I thought my damn boat was on fire”
Anyway just wanted to post this just in case any QSM guys replace risers (1500-200 hours ) They said expect 8 hours of fast running to burn it off.
Pics of before and after. Last photo is an old one showing how it looks fine from the outside.

Same exact thing when I installed one new and one refurbished riser three weeks ago from them. Nice people and I enjoyed talking to them. And what a smell..... I also have the Seaboard blanket turbo insulation so a lot of things to "burn-in".
Didn't they provide you with new flange insulation blankets and V-band clamp?
Also, I wish I knew you were doing this as I bought a new tube of the flange jointing compound ($120) and only used enough to caulk two V-band flanges. I have almost a full tube still and would have let you use it....

I did get new v-bands, flange blankets and compound and used very little compound! I need new turbo blankets did you replace your turbos? Or paint them? Mine are brown not white.

Hi Joe - I posted this before - my "MAN man" paints the turbos and aftercoolers with black imron. Stops the "chocolate white " look. Some here did it on his Cummins as well...

Turbo's were serviced but were in spec anyway. The compressor housing was stripped and I painted with high temperature paint.

If I had the time I would have sent both the compressor and turbine housings to Jet Hot https://www.jet-hot.com/ and have them ceramic coated. I had the turbochargers on my jet boat done and they weathered very well and looked great up until I sold the boat.

I've sent both of mine back to DeAngelo for pressure test and new insulation over the last few years. Definitely takes a good couple of runs to burn it off.

Quick follow up and tip: if your swapping the riser yourself REMOVE THE OLD WATER SENSOR and install on the new riser. I didn’t do this and had to call Deangelo they found my old ones in the shop and are mailing me the sensors.
I thought the sensor was built into the riser on the inside I never looked at it :( that explained the alarms.

You got alarms with them disconnected? The wire must have been shorting to ground....

no let me clear it up. I thought the sensor was internal so I replaced the spade connectors with ring connectors and hooked them up to the small screws thinking it was internal (duh) the alarms went off but I confirmed proper water flow so I disconnected them for the sea trial. After speaking with (COD) he explained what I did wrong I love to learn new things.
