I'm in the process of remodeling the galley walls and wanted to see if my setup was normal. The light on the wall over is the sink will come on without the helm cabin light switch being on (boat is on the hard, shore power. I want to update the light fixture to an LED unit. Is the original unit dual power? Thanks

Lights are either 12v DC or 110v AC. The light you are referring to is most likely 12v DC. Remove the cover and remove a bulb. If they are simple quarter turn bulbs they are 12v DC. You can buy inexpensive LED replacement bulbs without replacing the entire fixture.

Got it, i just cannot understand how it comes on when the battery switch is off and i am hooked to shore power.

Is your ac/dc converter also off? If all is in off position that means only the bilge pumps both forward and aft (some older galvanic protection) and maybe CO2 sensors should work. Otherwise you may have a short or a mis-wiring condition.

the converter i assume is on to keep the batteries charged, the switch on the distribution panel above the dinette.

Some of the late 80s early 90s lights ARE both 12volt and 110 in the same fixture. Look for 2 bulbs, one is 12v, the other is 110. They are hard to find, I would suggest a RV on line store.

Thanks Bahama, I didn't even think of that. Need to check out the bulbs

my 1990 has the switch plate located next to the cabin entry, it has two rocker switches in it and one is for a 110 volt fixture above the counter/sink and the second switch is for 12 volt recessed lights in the ceiling above the counter.

Both 12 volt and 110 volt in the same switch box.

I was at the boat the other day and did some testing, there is 110 volt and 12 volt receptacles in the light fixture over the sink.

It's been some years but mine was both 12v & 120v. I popped a bunch bulbs before I figured it out...lol
