Raw water pump 496 8.1 resurface housing

Has anyone here when changing out the impeller, have the groove marks on the housing? What was your fix besides getting a new one.
I’ve seen wear plates for sale and was wondering if anyone just took the housing to a local machine shop and resurface the area where the impeller rubs and what was the outcome.

I used the third party rebuild kit, worked great.

I brought it to a machine shop and they milled it, not expensive at all.
They removed so little material all the brackets lined up with no problem.
Was like new when they were done.

Unless I am mistaken, judging from your photo, you have the backing plate with the replaceable wear plate. Replacement part number I believe is: 8M2014176. They are like $8 or something like that.

You’re totally right. Thank you! the first time I looked at it I didn’t notice the plate! Double checked now and indeed you’re right. I think I was just exhausted From being in the engine compartment too long. Anyway. Thanks

Yep, newer versions of the raw water pumps run the wear plates with a slightly shorter impeller
