My sister and BIL have a place in Naples. One of those golf course gated communities. Not my kind of place, but its nice. Clubhouse restaurant with annual minimums and lots and lots and lots of rules. They knew that going in, but they didn't notice all of the "special" rules designed to keep out the riff raff (like them, it seems).

You are not allowed to park a truck in the driveway. So my BIL's US$70,000 2020 Denali truck is clearly a POS that they don't want people to have to look at. But I guess a Denali Tahoe SUV would be OK. Laughable. Its not my issue, and I guess you have to read ALL the fine print in those places.

Corp HQ in FLA, I go there frequently on business. Lots of 4 wheel drive monster trucks, highest elevation is a speed bump. Why? Cause a Camry don’t mount a gun rack too good?

There are so many problems when buying in a deed restricted community. We owned a place in one and after 8 years of use I rented it and moved into another property we owned. They can also change the rules with a majority vote of people that live there as the residents get older they get really stupid. My buddy that has a place there told me that they voted in a rule that you have to wash your roof if they deem it looks dirty, wtf it's a roof. We sold that property June 2019 sold it without a realtor as there is a waiting list for people wanting to buy in these places.

They have the clean roof law, and a clean driveway law, and a paint color law, and and and..... they knew it when they bought but I guess should have realized that owning a luxury 1/2 ton would be a deed crime. They think there may be a way to get permission. Chained and naked, you walk the streets to the clubhouse with your neighbors chanting: shame, shame, shame, shame and go to the clubhouse where the decision is made (shameless GOT reference)

Yup all of those and no lawn cutting or yard work on Sunday. If a weed started to grow out of a driveway seam we would say oh there's a guy with grass in his crack a letter is coming.
I just ignored them because there was no provisions in their "Grey Book" to enforce any type of penalty. The pool and clubhouse were the attraction just gorgeous would still be there if more of the old timers were gone.

They even specify that window coverings "shall have a white color" that shows from the outside although in the same section they forbid tin foil as a window covering. Can't you just picture the HOA meetings? If I was there I would put forth a whole bunch of proposed amendments to the rules as a total lark, for them to debate endlessly.

I totally get that you don't want people with rusty cars parked on the lawn and appliances in the side yard, but some of this stuff is really nuts.

I hate my neighborhood and the old retired people that have nothing better to do the HOA stuff. When we moved in 22 years ago, it was great. Younger families with kids, lax enforcement of "rules." Annual block party with lots of beer and stuff -- our HOA Pres. owned a local restraunt and had his guys come over a cook for us. And then, almost overnight it changed. The families moved out and the fkg old people moved in. All they do now is bitch and moan about every little thing. They want everything enfoced to the "letter of the law." Can't have new fences even though 25% of the home have fences. Have to have approval for all sorts of changes. God forbid you bring your work truck home for a night. We cancelled the block party because the new lady that ran it made parents sign up for shifs to watch over the bounce house (instead of highering a few neighborhood kids) and promtply closed the part up at 8:00 pm. Nobody likes each other anymore. It sux.

thats exactly why i live in the country. I can do what ever I want to do on my property. I am not a neighborhood type guy when it comes to that. but i will say the older i get the harder it is to maintain.

+1000

It’s MY property, I don’t see their names anywhere on my mortgage or tax bill, etc.

Maybe, and that’s a BIG maybe, if they were to start paying 50% I would give them a bit of say in things.

That's exactly how I felt. My wife would have been satisfied living in town, I wouldn't do it. The last thing I wanted was to look out my window at the side of the neighbors house. I told my wife I'll walk around in my yard in my underwear if I want, I'll pee off the front steps if I want, I'll cut my grass when I want, and I'll shoot my guns anytime I want. Took six years but for the 41years since I've actually been able to do all of the above.:)

@Woody remind me to never sit on your front steps and have a beer with you.
