Hello all, here another job that has to be done.
Unbelievable how many things got broken in the first month after buying our dreamboat. The previous owner didn’t boat the last two years and we found out in almost everything that he didn’t lie.

One of those bummers where the cushions. When we survey the boat all cushions seemed oké. Oké the ship is almost 26 years old but it looks oké for now. Unfortunately after a couple weeks cracks came out and some holes from screws that came true because the foam inside the cushions getting soft.

I really hate is when you see the vinyl having holes and cracks. It looks so poor on your beautiful ship. Luckily we have a good relations with the boat shop that also do upholstery. We bought some foam plates and a great new vinyl and may use there workspace to make the new cushions. We bought a complete rol vinyl that will cover all vinyl elements in the cockpit. For now we do only the sitting cushions. Next winter we will do the back cushions. And now and then in coming summer when I have time we do side panels etc.

First I removed all the staples. A lot of staples pffff. I saw that they stretched the vinyl in the past by cutting it and restapled, poor me, had to remove double as much staples. The old foam was so soft and black from moisture and mold, I had to renew all foam. The underground is from hard plastic, after cleaning the glue they were in pretty good shape.

original they use piping. But we experienced by al are previous boats the piping really hearts when you like to lie down on the cushions. And we like to lie instead of sitting. Therefore we choose for a flat cushion. It’s maybe a bit boring cushion but we prefer comfort. We also selected a white color, again maybe a bit boring but misses plays a lot with decoration cushions in different colors. As with background white we have every season a different couch.

Misses did the sewing part and I did de foam, cutting vinyl and staples.
I keep the new cushions at home until the new canvas is ready and no rain is coming in.(yes the canvas had to be renewed too. When it’s ready I will post the proces). And after the canvas is made and new cushions are placed I post the result.

the back cushions are looking good except from the mold and mildew spots. I read some good things about marine 31 but here in the Netherlands I can’t buy it anywhere so I bought startbright mrs. next week gonna try that. Any advise, tricks for removing heavy mold and mildew spots are welcome.

Nice work. Many will disagree but if you’re going to redo the backs anyway you could use a magic eraser on them. It is slightly abrasive, but will clean them up. Then hit them with a good conditioner.

The vinyl we use is Viper from Vyva Fabrics.
Viper has a good stretch and feels so amazingly soft and really feels like leather.

When we were making the cushions the vinyl was easy to work with.

I must say that the vinyl feels thin, they told us it’s very strong though. We have to experience how it holds. So for a complete review about the Viper vinyl i have to come back after the summer season. 1 thing I can definitely tell: it feels really great.

Marc,
Beautiful job! Do you leave her in the water all winter or do you haul out and block?
Yes she stays in the water this winter. A year ago nothing was sure and in august when she arrived in the Netherlands there was no more place inside the winter storage.
To be honest we now are happy that there was no place because meanwhile we discovered so many bad/broken things that we didn’t find when being stored in a warehouse.
Luckily this winter is a soft one and so far temperature stayd above 5degree Celsius. We had been on board till 31th December fixing things. Now with making new cushions we are sleeping most time at home.

April gonna be the engines and genny time. Change all filters and oil and replace some new seals here and there where oil sweats.

4th of May she goes out the water for bowthruster installation and couple other things. 1st of June she has to be ready and then our first big trip starts......

Always best to get a sample first Carter. For us the white from Viper vinyl fits the Sea Ray vinyl very good.

One of the reasons that we did all seat cushions now and the backs later is that in this case different vinyls are harder to notice since they are in different positions.
2 different vinyl seat cushions are easy to discover.

If you plan on replacing the seat backs in the future, I suggest that you buy the vinyl now and store it away.

I didn’t buy enough to complete my reupholstery job and had a difficult time finding a match when my original supplier couldn’t locate any more of the color from my original purchase.

Yes as mentioned before we bought enough (36meter) for the backs and all panels in cockpit.
Not only in case the company stops making the vinyl but more important that all the vinyl used is from the same fabric proces so everything is the exact same color and print
