Rookie mistake?

New pump, you’ll be fine. When your block is drained, and you “Summerize” it’ll take a couple of seconds for water to get to the pump from the muffs/hose coming from the drive anyway.
There’s the theory on other sites of “Air Don’t Freeze”, but I agree with leaving AF in the block to inhibit corrosion and mix with any potential water in the water jackets.

I used to Winterize this lady’s boat after her divorce, and the procedure was to just pull the plugs and that’s it - let it drain and sit. No AF. Never had an issue.
What I did first spring startup was pull the blue plug in the thermostat housing and put the garden hose up to it, fill until water came out at outdrive. Then put on the muffs, no dry startup that way.

Yes, and no. The "pink" antifreeze does not inhibit corrosion.

That's not entirely correct... The $3/ gallon antifreeze has no corrosion protection, the $6/ gallon pink stuff does. Home depot sells both so for engines/genny I always make sure to get the $6/ gallon pink stuff.

Just adding one more little thing about the pink stuff... the cheaper stuff is specifically not meant for engines and can CAUSE corrosion. But because it's not recommended for engines to start with, it's kind of a moot point since one would never use it, anyways.
