Searay cuts 24 positions at Forks of the River plant

Sad...very sad.. my SeaRay dealer still has un-sold 2009 Sundancers in the showroom. My boat is not ready for trade-in because the owner (me) is not ready to take a bath on my current boat. I would love to move up but I am not ready , willing or able to take the 10K loss on my current boat and add that to the payments on a new boat.

Hate to hear anyone loosing their job in this day and age. It's a rough climate for anyone right now!

The bottom line is the middle class is disappearing. Wage freezes and cutbacks are the norm now and fuel prices will stop all growth that involves energy. It will be interesting at the Gas Dock this summer, Mike.

Yea im gonna be sittin at the dock a lot this year too.No raise in almost 6 years but the shop has had two raises in the labor rate it gets from the insurance companies. And the boss just keeps spending money ,on his kids wife etc... Tells us how broke he is but he is looking at buying a new 18k snowmobile after having a 5 grand bigboy kit done on his current sled, and of course the harleys and hummer and lexus and now two kids in college that dont ever want to actually work for a living.

If Sea Ray is cutting back what's going on with the Bayholer jobs then ??.

As in no boats or very few buying fuel......

There was this song..........

"I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time"

Most of our customers are either kids on Jet Skis or adults on Pontoon Boats. We did sell quite a bit of gas the last time it spiked due to people just staying home from vacationing. I need the Gas Dock to keep my boat and other cruisers full at the Club. It can go good or bad when the price spikes.....that's why it will be interesting. We only sell about 5,000 gallons a summer....open 1-5pm Sat & Sunday. Gives me plenty of time to boat in the evening/overnight/morning, Mike.

Ugly.....hate those stories.....

I think you have to take these news reports in perspective. Given that sea Ray employs roughly 1000 folks in the Knoxville area, cutting 24 jobs seems like little more than balancing production capacity to demand, and is hardly news worthy. I bet you that the same news outlet that reported the loss of 24 positions never reports the additions Sea Ray makes to staffing levels during the production year because it isn't sensational enough.

The other observation I have is that we have very few true news outlets in the US anymore. Everyone sells advertising and tries to sensationalize the news to draw in viewers and ad revenue.............ever try to watch the Weather channel for just weather? Or how about the news teasers for the lead story in the local evening news........you hear the same teaser 4-5 times followed by advertising and you get so tired of the Re-bath, heating and cooling, or local Toyota ads that you forget the news and move on.

So, in the grand scheme of things, Sea Ray is a great company who builds great boats and if they need to adjust staffing a little, then its just business as usual.
