Shift Actuator Fault

An update to my particular problem. We were able to run a half of tank of fuel through it this weekend without a hiccup. It made for a really nice weekend!

It seemed to relate to a valve in the thermostat housing. There is a poppet valve (spring plunger) that is normally open with water flow to allow cooling water to bypass the t-stat and cool those horribly nasty evil cats. There were times that water flow was not enough and did not allow proper cooling. When the sensor on the cat saw over 215 degrees, it invoked gardian and I had to throttle down. After the throttle down, it cooled enough to erase the code and start the cycle over. It was at a point where it was so borderline that lake temp (running upstream in cooler flowing water, as opposed to downstream in the impoundment) made a difference as to the frequency of the problem. All sensors, cats, and electronics were doing their job properly, it ended up being a purely mechanical failure.

A hint was the difference in water pressure between port and starboard. As with any electronic device (boat, car, equipment) there has to be a proper baseline of operation before the electronics can do their thing.

Glad to have this one behind me, learned much of the systems, always a good thing to know what's going on under the hood!
