Show us what you do, stuff you make

Work as a Maintenance Electrician on Industrial automation for a Large company in MN. I fix the computer controls inside the machines that make the parts in the items you use every day. Been doing this with them for 22 yrs, 30 plus years in all. Employer does not allow pics to be taken of equipment (proprietary stuff).

Bought a 1990 310 Sundancer that needs some minor repairs (she's almost 30). Looking at updating the berth and cockpit areas. The cabin carpet has to go, blue shag.

I own an antique mall with 35 dealers and also buy and sell antiques and collectibles.

Well, I'll jump in... Some of you know who I am and know that I used to be on this site all the time... My career has taken off and I'm usually busy fighting the corporate fires that accompany what I do. I enjoy it and I think it's interesting. I am a CAD monkey by heart. I love using the software to create parts and then have them created into tangible objects. Here's a few of the projects I've been working on over the past 8 years!!!

We build and install automatic Gates. These are all hand made from scratch. The tractor is a half scale of my grandpa's 41 Farmall

Hillside, that is some beautiful work. When I looked at the first photo I thought the tractor was parked beyond the gate. It wasn't until I looked at #2 and #3 that I realized they were part of the gate.

Danged nice work.

It blows my mind what some of you guys do/create. Good for you! The American dream is alive and well. After a career in law enforcement, my wife and I opted to hang out at the marina and help those that needed/wanted help with their boats, so we started a business detailing boats. It’s not technical, but sometimes does

take a decent touch with a buffer to bring back the beautiful to gelcoat. It’s hard work, but rewarding.

In the immortal words of Lloyd Dobler:
“I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.”

So with that being said I fly airplanes for a living.

Boat Captain in the summer running a few charters here and there... Ski instructor in the winter and a bill collector to pay for it all... I own a collection agency. I must say you guys are all pretty amazing in your various skill sets, I am humbled. I want my back deck enclosed like the pictures from canvasmedic !!

I find this type of activity to be very "zen". I start on either a car or boat and before I know it hours have gone by. the only thing reminding me of time is an ache or pain. there is something to be said about seeing the results of your labor

Me too! Nothing better than a nice day of detailing with the radio playing in the background. Been boing it since I was about 15.
Getting tougher these days (turning 65 next month) but I still find it a great way to unwind just need more Advil these days.
But nothing beats standing back and taking in the finished product.
I’ve had to winter in a boatyard with the bigger boat the last two years instead of up on my own property like I did with my old boat.
I get approached all the time in the boatyard when I’m getting my boat ready to go in the water by guys asking how much I would charge to do theirs. Even the yard owner and his son have asked.
Ten or twelve years ago I may have considered buying a truck, some scaffolding and starting a business, but just don’t have it in me anymore.

This is actually how our business got it’s start: people at the marina saw our boat and how we cared for it and asked if we could help them. Before we knew it, we had 30 jobs pending. Funny you mentioned the radio playing...a guy at our marina complimented our music the other day, saying we have the best “sound track”. As anyone who’s waxed their own boat knows, it’s hard work, but there is satisfaction, like domer94 said, in seeing the results of your labor.

It looks a bit crazy, but this is a system that tests rack and pinion electronic power steering systems.
The two large gray items to the left and right in the picture float on air casters and contain linear electric motors. These motors attach to the tie rod ends of the steering gear. Each motor is capable of about 300 millimeters of travel on air bearings and can generate about 20,000 Newtons or 5000 lbs. of force instantaneously. The rack and pinion unit is mounted on the center object where my co-worker has his hand. That object, is called the HAGS or height adjustable gear system and has an up down travel of about 500 millimeters. What cant be seen behind my co-workers head is the steering simulator motor. Although I've been involved in just about every aspect of this thing, my primary job is software engineer making sure all the parts move when they are supposed to. The super fine control of the motors for simulation of the real world or playback of test track data is done by my boss.

Jeeze, who new anybody did stuff like this. I don’t even understand how a cell phone works, for crying out loud. Two of my older brothers are engineers in nuclear power, and one work on weapons systems (you’ve heard of the systems, but it’s not my place to discuss his world on this site). But I didn’t get those gifts. I’ll say again, the people on this site amaze me.
