Hi all. W have had our boat since new in 2007, The windlass has been great. Just recently, I noticed that the windlass is slow and seems weak. Not being an electrical wizard, I am asking on the method to test and diagnose the problem. Some have suggested that the trouble could be loose or corroded connections, weak battery, or bad motor. The topside of the windlass is clean and lubed. Removing the motor and gearcase from the anchor locker is a job from hell and should not be done unless required. The windlass breaker has never popped. Please feel free to chime in with suggestions, Thanks, Griff.

First thing I would do is disconnect, clean, and reconnect the wires. There are three of them and they are easy to access wuthout dissambling anything, at least on my Lewmar. If you call a repair technician, the first thing they will ask is if you did this.

It looks like you already know your options - pick which ones you want to do first. Yes, working in an anchor locker is tough - but it's par for the course when wrenching on your own boats.

Another thing to observe - if it's only pulling in slowly but still making the normal sound... make sure the clutch is not slipping - tighten it if needed.

Thanks all. I just had the 3 batteries checked. They are all good. Connections are tight. Looks like I will have to remove the motor and gearbox.

Now ready to put the gearbox and motor assembly on the bench. Problem is the pesky spiral ring that is on the bottom of the windlass shaft. It's only reason for being there is to keep the drive key from falling out into the anchor locker. I have made no headway to unwind this spiral ring. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks.
