Trying to get some additional information on what the troubleshooting or what I need to do to fix this small leak. Mechanic states need to pull shaft and realign engine? 7 hours plus parts?

Thanks

Looks like your tides shaft seal is leaking if you do not have a spare seal already attached to the shaft which would be a few inches further up the shaft then yes ,the mechanic needs to have your shaft removed and the seal replaced be sure if there is enough room that you can add the spare seal so that next time if the seal needs to be replaced you don’t have remove the shaft . Typical life for a shaft seal and assembly is about 10 Years but I have seen double that in certain instances . As far as hours ago I can’t see it being a seven hour job Not sure if there is a standard time frame for a job like that

Thank You Joey. Do you know the part number for the shaft seal and what other components are needed? The mechanic wants to also do an alignment of the shaft is that normal, he is recommending both the Starboard and Port side?
Thanks.

If it turns out to just be the lip seals then it is one per shaft plus one spare per shaft the spare comes with a carrier kit I think they’re around 80 each for the spare seal kits and less for the replacement lip seal.

The reason for realigning the shaft is to make sure that it is running straight and true if it’s not it will wear out the lips seal pretty quickly and you’ll be back to square one again , so it is important to realign the motor and shaft assembly coming through the shaft log

A whole new dripless shaft seal assembly from tides marine should be around $450 each not sure if you need to completely replace the whole assembly but the lip seal is definitely a ware item that would normally be replaced. Make sure that he cleans the shaft where the lip seal will be riding on thoroughly with emery cloth but not polishing fore and aft on the shaft , but round and round As to not leave any sanding scratch marks where It can’t seal
