St Joseph Michigan transmission mechanic

Maybe we can diagnose and get you running again. If at least running in one direction, that’s a good sign.

What transmission? Mechanical or electric shift? Can you post a pic of the specification plate? First 2 things regardless…

If mechanical, you’ll need to verify the shift cables are pulling the actuator to its fully engaged position in both Fwd and Rev.

Is you transmission filled to the recommended level.

if electric shift, I have a few ideas…

I would hope any of the marina's in the area would have a mechanic able to work on it. However, if it's something major, it probably needs to come out and be rebuilt. For that there is Federal Marine Transmission in Chicago. Good luck.

Does anyone know of transmission mechanic near St Joseph. I am currently limping back to port with a transmission that stoped working. I have reverse but no forward. Thanks
Kalamazoo Marine Gear if it is determined it needs to be rebuilt. Craig has been there a long time and is very knowledgeable. Give him a call and he may be able to walk you through the issue.

Called all local marinas they all said they sub it out. Did find a Cummins shop in Grand Rapids who has given me some tips to diagnose the issue. Tried to swap reverse Selena if with forward. Did not work. There is an override button on top of selenoid that when raised will engage the shaft. Weird. They are calling zf in Chicago for more information.

You have electric shift. You should be able to apply a dc voltage to the solenoids and the solenoid should engage. All you need to diagnose is some wire long enough to connect to a battery or other 12/24V (I think you are 24V?) source.

I would first wiggle the electrical connector while engine is running and the gear lever is in FWD. if you get the transmission to go into gear, you have a loose connection.

Next make a set of jumper wires and connect to the batteries or other known good source of DC power. Remove the solenoid connecter and jumper to the 2 terminals facing each other. If the gear engages, you have an electrical problem in the shift system.

If you still don’t have the gear engaging, you may have a bad solenoid. Pull the solenoid and apply power, you should be able to hear or see it actuate. If nothing, bad solenoid.

2 sources for parts. Transmission Marine has better prices, SBMar might be a better source of information. I’m guessing on the right solenoid…please verify what you actually have.

If it’s not electrical, or a bad solenoid, then it might be a bad pump or or something in the valve/pump system. This was what it was for my transmission last year.

these transmissions are fairly simple and easily fixed with some basic hand tool.

I have had this problem on multiple electronic shift transmissions. You can test this without doing any electrical testing by having the boat at idle, by lifting the knurled knob as mentioned earlier. It should engage the trans. I have done this to get a boat home. If you have done this and it has engaged you probably have a bad solenoid/valve. They are sold as one and easy to install. Before buying the valve I would check the terminals that feed the solenoid to make sure there is not a voltage problem.

Thanks for the help to diagnose this issue. I have made several calls to shops to no avail so I am fixing this myself. I am going to go ahead and get the solenoids and new plugs. I am 4 hours from the boat so when I go I want to have what I hopefully will need. The plugs are so rotten the fall apart in my hand so all need replaced anyway. Since I have reverse and can override to the forward to get in gear and after reading all your posts I’m praying this is the answer. If it is it will be straightforward swap. In my world it’s never the easy solution though. I’ll keep you all posted.

Sounds like a plan. If that’s the case, definitely sounds electrical.

Keep us posted, and take lots of pictures, in case you need some help while there, might get you out of a jam. This site is pretty good with that.

Good evening, I am looking for some advice on the following issue, we have just purchased an SR 240 year 2001 mercruiser 5.7 bravo 3 engine, which was unused for the whole of 2020 due to the pandemic, before throwing it into the water it was maintained and Everything was in order, but when we tested it in the water we noticed that the steering wheel is very hard to turn, I checked the steering pump oil with the engine off and also on and the level is fine but the oil looks like stalled, can anyone advise me that I should check or how I can solve this problem ..

Additionally, the switch panel that controls the fresh water pump, the blower, the lights, the horn, etc. suddenly stopped working, I checked the fuses are good and tested if current reaches the switch connector and 12.5V reaches the red wire and 5.1V to the Orange cable, does anyone know where else I can check.?
Thank you very much in advance .

You should start a new thread on this for a better response.

I went to the boat yesterday after getting the 2 solenoids and Coil caps from seaboard marine. Took the old out, put in the new. Rewired the caps and it works like a charm! They have changed the style to a square type from the round.

Hi good for you
My ZF transmission doesn’t go forward and backward
After I lost 5 liters of oil thru the transmission cooler .
I put back 5 lites then it operate backward and not on forward
Il switch the selenoid to see if it was the problem. No
But I see Somme metal hairs in the cavity .
Should I RA make or change my transmission?
