Starlink

I've seen a lot of complaints regarding the ethernet adapter. I added it to my setup to try a mesh network but saw slower speeds so I cut it out. The SL Router actually has better signal strength at my gate vs the Mesh Network I bought....can't explain it but it seems backwards to me!

Could be a Musk thing as they want you buy their equipment, by slowing the data flow down. That could be why I think the PL is the throttle point, never thought the adapter could be as I am still using it.

Very good call! I did not buy their Mesh setup...and at this point it's not worth it for me to do so.

I'm a few weeks away from having Fiber and putting my RV Starlink up for sale.

The one thing I wish could be done is swapping array's in and out at will of the same account. I know that sounds stupid, but I recently purchased a slip under a roof and my SL will not work mounted to the boat as it is now. I am close to a bulkhead and could put the SL on the hard while in the slip. But my setup isn't setup for switching like that. I have that slip rented out until next winter so I have time to come up with a solution for that. Might have to switch between SL and Cell accounts. ...

Ah, ok. I think that the wiring from the SL router to the adapter also needs to have the green and blue wires swapped as well. That could be your issue. I don't believe SL uses a standard network pinout anywhere in their system.

Edit: Also keep in mind that at some point you need a network cable that is a standard RJ45 pinout on one end and "XSwapped" on the other end. That XSwapped goes to the poe injector as the data connection and XSwapped from there on out.
Yup, followed the pin out for all cables. I think its either the lack of shielded cabling or the adapter as @firecadet613 mentioned. Will see if i can swap those for better results.

Actually it sounds like the adapter is the bottle neck and slowing things down. I did a quick google on this after @firecadet613 mentioned that and it seems to be the case. Might be your issue here. As mentioned I thought it was the PL that was the bottleneck, but I think I was wrong in that thinking.

I had the exact opposite experience. The SL router had terrible range. I bought the ethernet adapter and wired it up to a mesh network (from Deco), and now I have decent throughput throughout the house.

Are you in an area with other wifi networks or good cellular service? I wonder if it just can't handle interference.

I also agree with @bobeast I thought the coverage was extremely limited. I had mine in the cabin and couldn't reach the dock.

Did some testing today with a shielded cat 6 at speeds are back up as with the StarLink router. Also note that you can still stow and unstow the dish via the StarLink app with the router deleted.

Cool, glad to hear it was something simple like that. When you say deleted, do you mean it's totally removed or bypassed? But glad that it still works as you wanted.

Totally removed.

This musk guy has this thing figured out….. it should be quite the thing in a while

Greetings from the USVI. I’m down here at Skip’s place. He is the creator of the 420 thread. He just had Starlink installed at his house down here. He loves it. Right now, on my iPad I’m getting 64 Mbps down and 7 Mbps up. I don’t know exactly where the router is. I’m sitting in the living room.

Here’s the problem/question: If I go out the sliding glass door to the deck, literally 15 feet away, the signal goes to essentially zero. As I’ve followed this thread because I think it’s amazing what you guys are doing. Would I be correct in saying that poor signal is due to the Starlink router, and that better coverage could be attained by adding a new router after the SL router and disabling or bypassing the SL router?

I just wanted to give feedback from the USVI. All comments and suggestions were SPOT on. In fact, Skip had (unbeknownst to me) scheduled the local island communications tech to come to the house to finish up the Starlink installation. As it turns out, what they did initially was install Starlink, using the SL router and had a network named "StarlinkTest". Sort of a proof of concept network. This was the one we were using just fine in the house, but as soon as we stepped out on the deck, the signal whent Tango Uniform. The Tech was there for about 45 minutes and essentially what he did was install a PepLink router, the network name changed, and the signal was great all over the house and the deck!

Thanks again Club Sea Ray!

And so it begins - received an email this morning - It's only $15/month so just an annoyance. I hate getting nickle'd and dime'd.

The monthly service price for Starlink is increasing in areas with limited capacity. As a service that can be used in any area, including those with limited capacity, the monthly service price for existing Starlink for RV customers will increase by $15 to $150/month beginning April 24, 2023.

If you do not wish to continue service, you can cancel at any time on your account page. Your Starlink hardware can be returned for a full refund within 30 days of purchase, or partial refund of $250 within 12 months of purchase.

As the SpaceX team launches more satellites to increase capacity, the Starlink team is making continuous network updates to improve performance over time. Thanks for being a customer and for your continued support of Starlink!

What I find interesting about the price increase, that increase is only for people in areas with limited service. So not only is the service degraded at times now it even cost's more to get it. And only certain accounts are being targeted on the increase. To me sounds like the boating crew is who is being targeted for this increase.

Yeah, have seen this trend before. Data caps which you can pay for higher usage packages then the price slowly creeps up. One would think the price plans would be less with more subscribers but I guess if the demand is there why not increase it.
