Anybody have any recommendations for surveyors in the Sacramento Delta area? I am looking at a new-to-me/used boat. Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation and others have recommended Steve to me too, but both of these numbers "can't be completed as dialed." Any other suggestions out there?

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Dan,
I cannot remember the guy's name but Eric at J & H Marine in Stockton recommended someone to me when I was selling the 52. Give him a call and see who the recommend.

    What are you looking at?

Thanks Shawn. I’ll give him a call. Looking at a 2002 Rinker 342 FV. We weren’t really looking, but this was a good opportunity that came up.

So, if you know anyone that is interested in a very well maintained ‘88 340 Sundancer, let me know!

Is it the one Delta Yacht Sales has? If yes, it’s a very nice looking boat. But for me, the small block engines and the outdrives, new or not, would kill the deal for me. Even tho the engines are 310 horsepower, it’s all about torque when pushing nearly 16,000 lbs. Additionally your fuel economy will suffer as the small block engines will be working hard to do what a big block will do easily. And do you really want to deal with outdrives? The ad says they were replaced. Why? Will they have to be replaced again?

Sorry to rain on your parade but I would look hard at this. And when you sea trial it take along a couple of friends to see how the boat performs with a load.

Dan, I kind of second Shawn on the Rinker. We had a 2008 350 before the Searay 44 we have now. Great boat for Lake Berryessa and I know you are up there in Fresh water but I had real problems with the composite drives. I understand that shortly after we sold her the new owners had to have them replaced. They still had less than 250 hours on them to boot. I really thought the Rinker was a well built boat but factory support was horrible and the family run dealership in Bethel Island were not much help. I know you were looking for a Surveyor recommendation and not boat buying advice. It took me 1.5 years to sell ours and we finally traded it in. Hope what ever you do you fare well.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice. It’s not the one that delta yacht sales has, but it’s similar. So, I’ve done tons of research on outdrives and talked to lots of people and it seems the opinions on them are all over the place. I do understand that maintenance is a little more on outdrives. I know the owners of this boat and, in three years, haven’t had any issues with the drives.

I have driven it and didn’t think the performance was anything to be concerned with. I thought it performed well. Most people have told me that fuel economy will be better with outdrives. And this boat and a 2000 340 Sundancer went to SF together last year and the Rinker had way better fuel economy. I know it’s not an apples to apples comparison, but I don’t think the small blocks will be an issue.

It’s a tough decision and I appreciate the opinions. It gets surveyed next week and we’ll see what that says. And go from there.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Dan, it sounds like your definitely making a careful decision. We did love the 350 and our brand new 270 we had prior. I thought Rinker was a fine boat and our main difficulties came with the move to the brackish water of the Suisun Slough. The barnacles were ruthless on the drives. Stay in fresh water and you should be fine.
Maybe we will cross paths this summer if you swing through Benicia on a Down Bay Cruise.

Yes, I don’t think I would consider it if we weren’t keeping it in fresh water. We live in Roseville so I don’t see us moving it closer to the bay. That would just be a longer drive to the boat. A few people in our marina keep their boats on lifts. I might also consider that in the future.

We love visiting Benicia. One of our favorite destinations. We visit at least once a year, usually around Halloween. Perfect time to visit I think. I let you know next time we are down there. Of course, if you’re up here stop by!

    Thanks,
    Dan

Sounds like you're doing this the right way. Who did you end up with as a surveyor?

Thanks Shawn. Captain Jim Elfers for hull and James Hildebrand for engines. I couldn’t get a hold of Steve macnear and Bay Yachting Solutions never returned my messages, which is disappointing because I have used Pat Carson in the past and like him. Several people recommended captain Elfers and he was great answering my questions on the phone. Since this is a private sale, I have lots of questions! But it helps that I know the seller, so any mistakes are easier to fix.

I’m a little disappointed I won’t own a sea ray. The community is large and very helpful. This site has been invaluable to me. But the Rinker has some features that I and my wife really wanted that sea ray doesn’t in the same size boat.
