Teak Restoration

Mate, love what you have done.

We just got ourselves the same year and model. It had been neglected and we are in the middle of pretty much the same process of restoration.

Just a quick question, Are you planning to lacquer the teak when your done? I have had a few people suggest we do this, but i don't like the look myself.
you may have already answered this question and as i haven't read through every reply to this thread you'll have to forgive me if I am asking you to repeat yourself.

Muttley,

To answer your question, no I didnt lacquer and now I kinda wish I had've. I used at least 3 coats on most pieces and 4 on the deck pieces. The side rails still look pretty decent but are starting to lighten up a bit and the deck hatches are showing some marks where my chairs have slid. I'm gonna re-do most of the pieces later this year or in the offseason and I'll be using the clear coat when I'm done. So, without knowing the downsides of having it...I can say that based on what I know of it...I wish I had used it.
Hope that helps.

Jay

Jason,

Thanks. I think your's are like mine. did you have to remove a "plug" in order to get to the screws? If so, how hard was it removing that little bugger?

I have 1" "toe rails" on my forward deck. These are screwed to the deck from the top and the screw is covered by a teak plug. One way to remove the plug is to put a wood screw in the center and tighten the screw. This should cause the plug to raise where you can get a hold on it. After you reinstall the teak you will need a bag of new plugs. Just fit them to the whole, cut them off a little long and sand smooth. I agree with putting 4200 or similar in the screw wholes to keep water out.
Teak looks great when it is properly finished bit what a PITA when it needs it.

Hey everybody! Gettin ready to kick this season off and I plan on doing some touch up work to my teak. I wanted to fill some of you in though on what I found over the season and what I plan on doing better or different this time. I think I mentioned to Muttley that I wished I had've used the laquer or clear coat...I have to retract that statement, lol. The only pieces that showed any wear are the pieces that I either didnt add enough coats to or got scratched. The ones that I didnt add enough coats too are the gunny rails and thats just my lazyness trying to get away with 2 coats. This season the rails will come off and get the full monty. The piece that got scratched was my engine hatch cover and that was due to my folding chairs (the white ones that west marine sells for WAY TOO MUCH MONEY...that I got for 25) feet not having the proper caps. Well, I've solved all these issues and plan on having everything nice and shiny within a week or so. I have a few pics that I didnt post last year on how things ended up so if I can make em fit...I'll post a few soon.

Jay

oh yeah, those of you that did your own teak projects, how did they come out?

I see this is an old thread and I don't know how I missed it unless I was on strike at the time..........but the words "Teak" and "Lacquer" do not belong in the same sentence. Lacquer will not hold up outside and does not like water at all. If you want a gloss finish, then use a high quality gloss varnish like Epiphanese or Interlux Schooner or Goldspar. You might find this interesting:

fweb...

Thanks for pointing that out but I was only using the term laquer cuz he (Muttley) used it first and you know how words carry slightly different meanings when you get french-canada involved lol. I understand that though.....hence why I said clear coat as well. Either way, I wont be using either on my boat!
