The 2022 springtime Shine Thread

I was going to switch up this season and move to the smoove products but decide to stay with the same I’ve been using the last few years. Presta polish, meguiars mirror glaze, 2 coats of collinite. 8 hours and the port side is done. Beer, aspirin, sleep and start again tomorrow.

I swear this is a sickness. Just above my starboard side rub rail (sun side) I have a spot of oxidation along the rail that is still there. I told myself I would wait until she's in the water and use my dinghy to reach it....but now I'm picking up a 6' light stand today to give myself better lighting in the barn...and two different 3" rotary's with foam pads to try out.

Old Pic from the fall - not using my wash guys this year as it looks like they stripped my wax.

The blue side cleaned up nicely in the fall...but that curved spot right above the rub rail came back (pretty much my entire starboard side and the stern....that gets the day and evening sun). Do I wet sand it first then hit it? I have Smoove Pro-Cut 1000 and Bubble Gum on hand...but not against trying something else. Truthfully, I don't think I'm getting that spot with the 6" buffing pads all the way...hence the 3" ones on the way.....and here I was thinking I was done until my launch this Thursday...

I’d be hesitant to wet sand that spot with the vinyl decals right there. I’d try 3m compound on a wheel. Wet it a little. Then a good polish afterwards followed by wax

Is hit it with Starke level R on a wool pad and work your way up...

I did some digging, it was there when I bought it in 2019. So looks like it cleans up a bit and then returns.... but the horizontal line stays...

Pic is from 2019.

It looks past a compound at this point, but try it first to see if you're happy with the results. Otherwise I'd start with 600/800 grit and work your way up. Finish off with cut, polish, and wax.

I also toyed with just going from elevate to the polish but since it was my first year with this product I wanted to give their 3 (and 4 step in places) a try. I did hit it with a very bright LED at an angle and had a chance to see both elevate and ignition in the setting sun.

My take, elevate will be sufficient for most people and 90% of the time. What ignition does is remove the very fine swirl marks that you can only see at an angle in a morning or evening sun. Overall shine is about the same between the two
I am also considering the switch to Starke this year. My concern is applying the Ignition. I only have the Dewalt rotary. Did you apply Ignition with a pad and rotary or foam pad and random orbital? More specifically, what pads and machines did you use for Elevate-Ignition?

If all you have is a rotary you can cut with a white wool pad, and polish with a yellow wool polishing pad....with acceptable results.
This was when I was using Finesse It II for the polishing step. This was before I got my Rupes forced rotation for polishing. I use all Starke now.

I second the 3M yellow pad for polishing with a rotary…. I have an orbital but prefer the rotary. I use orbital for wax application

To varying degrees, rotary polishers will leave swirl marks, depending on the pad and compound used.

A forced rotation dual action polisher will remove swirl marks.

For that reason

Getting mine done this week.

I wanted to pull the boat at the first of the year and do bottom paint and give it a real good buffing while out of the water.
Because of the drought we have zero operable ramps on the north end of the lake until spring run off hits later this month.
So it is getting done in the water.
I gladly pay the $2,500.00 as I have done it in the water 2x and it is a bitch.
Her is my guy in the water.

Doing below the rub rail is a two day process for two of them.
When your in the skiff buffing it literally works every muscle in your body by 10 times. these guys are young and it kicked their ass.

Ya… I would call in sick

wow. Next time I do ours on land maybe I'll stand on a balance ball to really up the exercise level and simulate this.

Boat looks great!

Yep.

As you get to the bow of the boat the last four feet is unbelievable hard as your working on the angel of the V of the boat and then the curve of the bow while at the same time trying to keep the skiff from moving all over the place.

One guy has to be on the dock with a extension pole holding the skiff from moving all over the place while the guy in the skiff has to be pushing hard on the buffer.

Years past I have just taken the boat to a good shallow beach to do the bow however with the water dropping like it has on the lake all the beaches are not hard sand at this time. If you stand in two feet of water you slowly sink past your knees.

I wouldn’t do it for electrocution reasons. I have enough trouble on land. You ever get the cord caught in a rotary without a deadman?…. And then stand on a floatie !!… no reason to do that

So you used Elevate on a rotary w/white wool pad and followed with the Ignition also on a rotary with the 3m black foam pad? How was the final finish? Swirl marks/holograms etc? Called Starke and they said the Elevate was not a diminishing abrasive product. That's why I asked about the finish. I realize I could use a yellow pad but I wondered which pad, wool or foam, might produce the best finish.
