The truth about wearing a mask -finally

Actually there is no basis for this. I see runners in masks every day. The gym I frequent is military and there is an MP there making sure everyone stays masked. It's smart to make some preparations and get used to it before running a long way but it is not inherently dangerous.
Your lungs can collapse.....so you guys are full of crap..... are you just here to agitate...it’s getting obvious

Lmao dullard

How long ago were the tests 15 minutes or days? I was in the hospital for 5 days despite my blood being tested and every nurse and Dr. masks were mandatory if you got out of bed. When the surgeon came to see me each morning he asked me to put a mask on. The hospital was also not allowing visitors so the risk was probally zero or close to it.

The test had to be within 9 days of showing up at the track.
Then we had our temp taken at the gate.
If the test is not good enough for 9 days, why have the test of healthy people?
How about, if you are sick, don't come to the event?
In a hospital, with sick people, I get it, makes sense, wear a mask. But where we were, largely outside, in the heat? Nope.

Jeez, if you're going to participate in a thread you ought to at least read the previous posts. See posts #183 and #195.
Mask box label is legitimate, but people are misinterpreting it
https://www.politifact.com/factchec...able-homemade-masks-are-effective-stopping-a/
Funny how a handful of anti-mask tropes keep getting recycled while more and more new evidence of the efficacy of masks piles up.

Spin, spin, spin!!!

And I thought you could read. The box says what it says because the manufacturer does not want liability for others misinformation. The CDC itself just told Tucker Carlson that they never said a mask protected the wearer.

This from the CDC web site.

“We are not defenseless against COVID-19,” said CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield. “Cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus – particularly when used universally within a community setting. All Americans have a responsibility to protect themselves, their families, and their communities.”

I said it before as you keep this bullshit up....my local hospital banned cloth masks....you have to wear the blue white throw away masks to get in...riddle me that... smart one ?
Your hospital is the same as mine but the CDC as I quoted from their web site rather than running off at the mouth as you do. The reason the hospital asks me to remove my cloth mask and put on one of their disposable mask is they know the quality of the mask they give me. You really should read the CDC web site before shooting your mouth off.

It seems Chris Christie has discovered a new truth. Embrace masking to enable reopening, makes sense to me:
"I am happy and fortunate to inform you that I have recovered from COVID-19.
Before this good news, however, I spent 7 days in the Intensive Care Unit of Morristown
Medical Center to get treatment and insure this good result for me and my family. I want to
thank the doctors and nurses for their skillful and compassionate care. I want to thank the
manufacturers of Remdesivir and the Eli Lilly monoclonal anti-body cocktail for giving me
access to their extraordinary treatments. I am confident that all of those factors contributed to my
good health today.
When you have seven days in isolation in an ICU though, you have time to do a lot of thinking. I
did and have come to the following conclusions:
I believed that when I entered the White House grounds, that I had entered a safe zone,
due to the testing that and I and many others underwent every day. I was wrong. I was
wrong to not wear a mask at the Amy Coney Barrett announcement and I was wrong not
to wear a mask at my multiple debate prep sessions with the President and the rest of the
team. I hope that my experience shows my fellow citizens that you should follow CDC
guidelines in public no matter where you are and wear a mask to protect yourself and
others.
Having had this virus, I can also assure those who have not had it of a few things. It is
something to take very seriously. The ramifications are wildly random and potentially
deadly. No one should be happy to get the virus and no one should be cavalier about
being infected or infecting others.
But as a former public official, I believe we have not treated Americans as adults, who
understand truth, sacrifice and responsibility that I know them to be. I have also
concluded that like much else in 2020, that the virus is governed by our two dominant
political and media extremes: those who believe there is nothing to this virus and those
alarmists who would continue to close down our country and not trust the common sense
of the American people. Both are wrong. This is not an either/or proposition. The public
health consequences of ignoring the virus and the responsible safeguards that we need to
take will be additional illness and death caused by COVID-19. The public policy
consequences of continuing to shut down or re-shut down our country will be further
economic devastation to families, even more loss of education by our students and the
continuing loss of life through the drug abuse, suicide and depression caused by taking
away people’s ability to support their families. There is another way.
Every public official, regardless of party or position, should advocate for every American
to wear a mask in public, appropriately socially distance and to wash your hands
frequently every day. At the same time, we should be reopening in every corner of this
nation under these guidelines. Reopen all those places which have taken the brunt of
these shutdowns and allow our country to get back to a life where citizens can support
their families using common sense. Even during a contentious election year, we must
trust the American people with the truth. I believe that these two steps can bring our
country together while our pharmaceutical companies invent the therapeutics and
vaccines which will rid us of this virus.
While we may seem very divided today, I do believe we can use this public health tragedy to
bring us together. It is never too late to start. It will take leadership that both challenges and
trusts the American people. After all, we are America, the world’s greatest hope."

The problem is that is not what the powers that be believe. I agree with Chris, open up using appropriate precautions. Yet the "leaders" constantly act like those precautions don't work and keep us closed up. They really need to pick a lane.

To be fair, there is another group of "leaders" who want to open up, yet won't consistently back or exhibit appropriate precautions.

Actually, that's not what I hear. Maybe their version of precautions don't match (like wear a mask when you leave the house vs. wear a mask if you can't socially distance), they all require some level of precautions.

Look at it this way. Disneyland (CA) is closed. Disney World (FL) is open. There have been no issues at Disney World (FL).

I hope that my experience shows my fellow citizens that you should follow CDC

And there's the problem. 90% of the public thinks wearing a mask protects them. Unless you are wearing an N95 or equivalent mask YOU are not protected by a mask. And if you do wear an N95 mask then OTHERS are not protected. The CDC has become a CYA political organization. Their guidance like their record keeping is useless.

I was mostly referring to national-level leaders who have given some amount of lip service to social distancing and masking but have clearly not, by personal behavior, set the example. I think that is who Governor Christie was referring to. I take your point about the disparity across the country and Disney is a good example of a company that appears to have set up a successful model and probably ought to be allowed to open everywhere. But, there are also states and localities which have not set ups much if any in the way of "requirements" and we are seeing some of those spike in real time.

I don't know where you are getting your information but the published research (look back in this thread for some) shows that virtually anything placed over the nose and mouth will provide some degree of protection and slow the spread. This protection may not be perfect but it does have a profound impact, also documented with more and more supporting evidence coming in regularly. WRT N95s, are you referring to respirators with expiration valves? In that case, the user is supposed to cover the N95 with a surgical mask.

Can’t wait until the government lets us go out and play again

This all reminds me of the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925 and how ended up not being a trial about whether or not evolution was true or not. There was a lot of debate about whether the science was true or not, and religious fundamentalists who wanted the bible read literally for all time, wanted the science ignored and argued it could not be correct because it contradicted the bible. The courts knew that debating the actual science would not achieve the desired result, so the focus of the issue shifted to a religion issue. But in the end the prosecution won the battle to ignore the science and rule on the religious freedom issue. It became a trial not about what the science was, and that children could be taught that science. The science was put to the side.

So the governments in power in the south continued to suppress teaching of evolutionary science by law. And in the end, it was not until 1967 that many of the southern states were legally allowed to teach evolution in schools. I know there are a few out there that still dispute evolution (maybe because their own research into their gene pool does not show evolution?) but that is not the point.

The COVID mask and freedom debate not exactly the same because its not about suppression of knowledge. But there are elements of this that are very similar in that science gets pushed aside for political reasons. The US is the only major western country that had a major election so no wonder it became so pronounced there. Now that it is over, I hope we can start to get real scientific answers on what the best course of action is to shut this virus down. No BS, just the best opinion of medical professionals around the globe on what works and what doesn't. Any yes, that advice may change over time (we don't use leaches to clean blood any more). And that is what you should expect as more knowledge and scientific research continues.

The only problem is the "reaction" to the "science." If it's subject to change, because we are less than 100% certain (science can disagree), how about we don't act in ways that destroy peoples' livelihoods? How about we figure out ways to work within the pandemic? How about we don't arrest some lady sitting alone outside at her son's football game because she's not wearing a "mask?" Because here's the science for you -- The only thing that can control a virus is an antibody.

Governments have made decisions in the past that impact your freedoms. Implications of going to war, vaccination laws, seatbelt laws, speeding laws, zoning laws, construction standards laws, deciding what is a crime and what is not, laws about how business is legally conducted, anti-discrimination laws. All of civilized society is that way because of laws that when you get down to it, restrict freedom.

I think the most critical thing for America (and other countries) to figure out is how freedom interplays with protection of the people in a pandemic. COVID was pretty bad, but there WILL be viruses that are worse. How much worse we don't know. So of COVID.v2 comes around in another 10 years and kills 10 times more people, is that serious enough that you would support lock-downs? Maybe 5 times worse? What is that "line in the sand" that governments should use? Maybe its not a bright line. This one was not a bright line. And the line is moving all the time. At the start of COVID, the scientists were very worried it was going to be 10 times worse. So with the glorious wisdom of internet hindsight, there are lots of non-scientists saying that they were idiots. Around the world, all the medical profession are idiots because they didn't know how bad this could get? And the Governments are all idiots too? The virus didn't go away. They got that right. Cases are skyrocketing globally again and hospital cases and ICU beds are filling up again, just like they said it would.

But the really smart people are the ones posting on the internet with perfect hindsight. So when COVID v2 comes in a few years, I think we should not listen to the scientists, we should take an internet forum poll to decide what to do.

You have many problems. First of all. These laws you speak about -- have all been passed by legislatures, after hours, days, weeks, and many times years of debate. These lockdowns and mandates are edicts by dictatorial governors.

Second, when a Governor yields emergency power, he has a duty to consider all sides. He should have a bias toward the freedom and liberty of the people he governs. They need to answer the question -- what is the least disruptive way to meet our goals. Too many of these Governors are just on power trips.
