Tips and tricks

We could probably have an entire thread on uses for zip-lock bags.

- most leftover containers will fit in a gallon size bag. So much easier than saran wrap or aluminum foil.
- Using a zip lock to hold screws, nuts and bolts keeps projects organized for re-assembly
- Fill with crushed ice for use as cold compresses or to pack around food in a cooler.
- Use as phone and tablet containers to keep them safe from splashes.
- Use to hold your muddy shoes until you get to where you can clean them.
- Ditto for diaper disposal
- Invert a bag and use as a glove to pickup doggy-doo or really anything you don't want to touch.
Need a warm compress? Wet a paper towel and put it in the ziplock. Microwave it for a few seconds and there you go.

Complain to the wife for days that you have to paint the bottom of the boat again. She finally gets sick of hearing it and and calls you a bitch and says fine, ill do it then. Works every year

I have white/Blue/Red, and the red darn near repels them but I have to admit it looks a little spooky.

thank you for the tip, I have all blue, had red in my last boat, just never used them, didn’t like the look

I guess I will get some like yours, hate the bugs.

Painting boat bottom use airless sprayer to spray paint bottom. Remember bottom paint can be reduced.

Cut the top off your black-water filter, replace the charcoal and put it back together with a band of electrical tape.
Dont forget to replace the foam pieces at each end. I use the foam filters for aquariums. cut little 1 inch circles for the ends. Same box, 10 years. Not done with it yet.
I cut mine in half, and then put it back together with a 2" PVC coupler. Easy to take apart when needed.

- When filling your water tank, let the water run for a minute to flush out the old moldy water before inserting the nozzle.

- Never use a rubber garden hose to fill your fresh water tank.

- Never leave city-water connected to your boat when you are away from it.
No water goes into my tank unless it goes through this. I get packs of 2 every couple of years.
Prices vary wildly. 12-65 dollars. Do your homework.

I have had trouble with the short hose leaks terribly. Have you had better luck?

I don't use it. I never connect to dock water. Seen too many sinkings. I only fill the tank with this. I have a long rigid nozzle that holds the filter and hose vertical into the water tank inlet, while draping the hose over the fender basket.

In the effort of killing time, does anyone have some cool tips, tricks, modifications, inventions, etc, to post up? Maybe something creative you made to just make life on the water easier, or, just something to show off?

Im interested in custom outside the box type stuff, anything that makes boating better really.

If you have the rails that hold Down Riggers or Rod Holders, you can sand down plastic wine glasses and slip the in. You can always use more cup holders right?

Problem with using that system all the chemicals are taken out of the water to keep it from growing germs and mold in the tank.
Douglas, am I missing something here? What chemicals occur naturally in water that prevent the growth of germs and mold?

We use the Amazon equivalent for dock water and to fill the 125 gal tank. Fill the tank in the winter and takes most of the summer to use it all and never an issue in 3 years....never had a FW tank issue ever....

I was going to put some water and bleach in the tanks and lines today by taking the boat to the club. The water is turned on there, but not at our marina. Then the thought occurred to me that to flush that out we'd have to take the boat back there in a day to flush the tank.

Not worth it, I'll wait till the end of the month when they turn our water on.

Chlorine is added to the water supply to kill bacteria. With the filtered system the chlorine is removed causing bacteria to grow in the boat water lines. When the boat is left the water supply is shut off. The filtered water will grow bacteria and mold in the water lines since the chlorine is filtered out. And the lines are left with no flow and subjected to warm temperatures where bacteria can grow. Also if a fresh water holding tank is filled with filtered water imagine what could grow there.
