This may be a stupid question, but I plan to replace my trailer winch cable. It is the steel aircraft cable style. Currently, the cable comes from the bottom of the winch to the eye on the front of the boat, but all the pics I have seen of other trailered Sundecks like mine, show their cable coming from the top of the winch to the boat's eye. Does this matter? I mainly ask because when I winch the boat up to where it needs to be to ride, the cable rubs a bolt and maybe the cable coming from the top of the winch instead would help that? I am thinking the winch only turns a certain way, though, and it's probably how it was originally intended to be from the factory also. I just want it to be correct...which it may be fine as is and I can just do a simple replacement.

The cable is installed backwards. The ratchet is intended to hold the cable tight when pulled all the way in. Since its now tight on the reverse motion, the boat may or may not be secure on the trailer. Don't drive it on the highway until you get it fixed, and be sure to attach the safety cable if you do.

You really need to raise the winch up, coming off the top of the drum the cable should be in a straight line with the bow eye

Thank you for helpful responses....I purchased this boat as a project 2 years ago. I didn't really notice the trailer setup until I launched it the first time. The winch use to be MUCH higher, but it was hard to load due to the nose coming in too low and having to manually lift it up. I lowered the winch to help with this and it appears to be comparable with others I have seen trailered and works much better now. I assumed the cable on it is the original and it was correctly installed, so I felt that I would verify the cable was backwards (which I felt it was after looking more closely at others) before installing the new one different than the existing. Evidently, a previous owner replaced the cable and installed it backwards. Thankfully, I haven't had any issues towing, but I do have it strapped to the trailer at the back of the boat along with the safety chain on the front always on. The winch has never released that I can tell while traveling. Previous boats my family owned growing up were set up good on the trailer and I just never have had to deal with adjusting a setup, like many other boaters I'm sure. I appreciate your polite responses to this question and plan to install the new cable correctly. I agree with the cable being straight to the bow eye and it appears that it will be close once the new cable is properly installed, but will check that too. Thanks again!

You might want to consider getting a whole new winch with a strap pre-installed instead of the cable. The straps are much nicer. You can get a new winch with a strap fairly cheap and would be a better setup and save you alot of hassle.

You sir, should get a sense of humor, it was a fun way of answering your question. You probably still do not get the joke, nor the answer. Good luck...

I do have a sense of humor, the answer sounded more insulting than humorous as I read it. I apologize for misunderstanding your answer and sure...I get it. Thank you for your response and happy boating!

I intended it as the answer of "over the top" for the cable. The internet does not always translate that way. We try to have fun while we banter here. Glad you got what you were looking for.
