I replaced the filter on my starboard trans last night.

My question is what holds this filter assembly in vacum?
Or is it the cover and lower housing compressing together when the allen bolt is tightened?
Just want to make sure I did it right.

The filter housing is conical in shape so when you insert it in the transmission and tighten the allen head bolt, the top and bottom housings swell the o-rings as the 2 parts get closer together. It is important that the top of the filter housing be flush with the transmission case before you tighten the allen head bolt. The filter is on the suction side of t he transmission's hydraulic system so it isn't at all likely to leak if the lid was flush with the gear case.

If you have the cylindrical metal filter, you may benefit from a lesson I learned the hard way. Even though the filter ends look at a glance like they are exactly the same, only one end is made to fit the filter housing and the other to fit the cap. There is only a slight difference but the cap won't fit right if you put the wrong end up. I put one in backwards once and suffered from transmission fluid weeping from the cap. Now I mate the filter with the cap before I put it in to make sure.
