Truck diesel engine maintenance

Yes. As a matter of fact you certainly appear to be. I posted specific things back to the other post as well and you decided to just bash Ford products. My posts are not inaccurate - you may not like the answer but I don't really care.
So you really feel bullied:huh::smt089 It would be real easy to carry this on and on. This disagreement we are having is (ford vs chebby) is almost as bad as Christians vs Mooslims:smt021 It will never end. The one thing I will leave you with, I am open for any head to head competition with your tow vehicle. This includes all maintenance, performance, mileage or any other category....other than hauling people (comfortably), but hey, I didn't buy a station wagon! Have a nice day!!

I never said I was being bullied - even if I was I can handle it. But you are closed minded about the facts. At least we can agree on Sea Rays!

I can feel the love!!! :smt014

Thanks for the info guys, really

Sheesh, I really tried to prevent this from happening by stating from the start that I was interested in only a GMC/Chevrolet... I've been a Chevy guy since birth; no offense! :smt001

My mistake on the glow plugs; thought I read somewhere that they weren't used in newer generation diesels, but I can understand why they would be.

I had a Dodge 01 2wd 3500 dullie w/ the Cummins. I built the truck to just shy of 600hp. It was a rocket and so much fun to drive. Stock it was 215hp. Sold it to a friend just last year and he tows his race car trailer with it. There are many (Dodge, Ford, Chevy) building well over the 600hp mark now.

Make sure you add gauges. I had Boost, EGT and Trans Temp on the A-Pillar. Also had a Fuel Pressure gauge off to the side. Keeping tabs on vitals will keep the diesel running for a LONG time.

I MISS MY TRUCK... :smt089

Ok so I finally pulled the plug and am now the proud new owner of a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax Diesel / Allison transmission setup! I'm loving it...just bought it on Saturday.

Odd how it worked out too. So I've been looking for a long time, even before we purchased the 280DA (pre-October '10). I had a trucks that interested me to take a look at. This wasn't one of 'em. But then we decided to wait it out a bit and see how the gas prices go and maybe find another later. So then I go and do my usual web search and this one pops up first. First one I ever found that had everything I wanted...included the color (which I didn't really have as a requirement). Perfect match. So we were back on. Truck looks mint. Never know it was 7 years old. Kids are loving the rear seat too, in comparison to my extended cab Chevy.

So now up for sale goes my '97. :smt001

Here she is (not liking the puny looking tires though!):

What engine code is it.... LB7 or LLY? Good looking truck! The "pizza cutters" tires are the first mod...lol But, the 245's is how GM keeps it's towing #'s higher than the rest.

You will be amazed when you are hooked up to the boat and try to take off from the red light and step down too far on the go pedal....when the turbo spools you will be leaving two black marks...lol Sometimes I just reach up and hit the 4hi until I get moving. After you have had her a little while, call me and I will advise on some front end upgrades.

Yup. A common upgrade is going to 265/75's. Just enough of a difference to make it visually better, but minimal impact on power. ECM should re-calibrated for the tire size for best results. Very easy to do with tuners. In fact, with a tuner you'll actually end up with more power and more efficiency, even with the bigger tires.

Nice looking truck!

Actually if you take GPS speed you will be right on with 265's! With the 245's the speedo shows 2mph faster than actual. It has been this way on every GM truck I have tuned!

Yeah, you're right, you can't always rely on the speedo as being accurate. On my '98, it actually was accurate (within 1/2mph, anyways) with the 245's. With the 265's my speedo was off by 3mph at 70mph. On my year truck, I had to take apart the VSSB and reconfigure (resolder) the pins on the circuit board. Not terribly hard, but it's certainly much easier with the newer stuff!

Every Duramax truck 2500 and 3500 I have worked on the oldest was a 2003 up to 2010, the speedo is off 2mph with the 245's  It gets them out of warranty faster:smt021

On my '97, it came with 245's and I put on 265's. My speed was then right on.

There is a nice truck at work, a GMC, that has 285's. Looks real sharp. I do imagine that would impact the rear gear ratio somewhat, but probably not enough to worry about.

The engine code is the 'LB7'. 1st generation. But I'm good with that, because supposedly it gets the best mileage stock because of being the last without any emission equipment. Would sure like the HP and torque of the LBZ, but realistically I don't need it.

Truck has 85k miles so I'm pretty happy with it, had it a week tomorrow, running great!

I plan to get the winterized 280 off the boat lift next weekend and bring it home on the trailer. It will be my first time towing it, should be a breeze now!

One of our trucks is a 2001 D-Max. I've pulled a 280DA with it on a few occasions. No problems. We have NOT done any performance tuning to it. Now, do I notice I difference compared to when I use the '06? Yes, absolutely. But, I think you'll be happy with what you got - plus, you can always tune it if you want to down the road.

But, the '06 (LBZ, stock form) does get noticeably better fuel economy. The big emissions crap started with the LMM.

Either way, you got a good truck that should last you for a LONG, LONG time. Always use a good additive and change your fuel filter on a regular basis and you'll keep your engine (injection system) happy. Try to avoid buying diesel from places that don't sell much of it.

The reason I asked for engine code is seeing how it is a LB7, you need to run the VIN and see if it has had injectors replaced. There was a special extended warranty on injectors, I don't know how that has changed since the gubment bail out! If you develop a good relationship with a GM dealer they can probably get them covered. You should at the very least get a print out of the injector balance rates. I wish you were closer we could just hook up to it and see them. I think you will be happy with it. Just DON'T throw a tuner on it without doing some home work first.

:thumbsup:MORE GREAT ADVICE.....THIS SITE IS THE BEST..

Yes, I have read about the injector issue and the recall, and the extended warranty to 200,000 miles. Any advice on how to run my VIN to see what recalls it has been serviced for?

I'm not much of a dealer guy...my '97 only saw the dealer until it ran out of warranty, I've done everything else myself. But if I need to take it in to get the info I need, then I will.

I'm sure I will be happy with it, never had anything that got even close to 500ft-lbs of torque!
