trucks what old is new again

The current design of the full, size pickups from GM, Ford and Dodge are all really nice.
Wouldn’t mind having a 4x4 diesel version of any of the three. At this point I’d like to have a traditional single bench seat two door with a full size bed, but that style is pretty much plain Jane commercial around here.

I think I might just buy used, I don't think I'll live long enough to get 14 years out of my next truck anyway. It sucks having to recognize that but what can you do.

My issue exactly, don't need or want a 4 door. Machine shop guy today suggested to order the standard cab 8' bed and have it built to my specs. Gonna look into that.

I know I'm getting old, but nothing new in automotive excites me... I drive (primarily) an older Jeep Grand Cherokee....before they started screwing things up...I would buy another one today before I'd think about getting what I perceive as crap these days...I don't want a car that talks to me; decides what lane I want; listens in to my conversations; has 20 speeds;.... I want a dependable, rugged, good visibility (yes, I look back before turning) vehicle I can depend on....And not for $60k...More electronics and sensors the more things can go wrong....

The industry is turning me "crouchity" (Is that a word?)

I love this post. It’s me. My truck is a 2000 Expedition, my boat is a 1970, my Harley is a 1972.

Heated garages go a long way toward preserving cars and truck. I run our cars through a car wash weekly in the winter. 8 hours in the garage and they are dry. Dry, clean, cars and trucks are less prone to rust.

I have a 1997 Suburban. 2002 Impala. And a 1994 Coleman Pop Up camper.

We had a hail storm come through with golf ball size hail. After it came through I called my insurance company. My house got a new roof.

They totaled my Impala. They totaled my Coleman pop-up camper. And said my Suburban had $1000 damage to the hood. No, they don’t make cars like they used to.

My Suburban is just now starting to rust a little on the back rear by the tire. I have a friend who has a 2014 Expedition. The rear tailgate is rusting out. Another friend with a Dodge truck 2013. The body is already starting to rust

I guess I’m the only Ram owner on this thread right now unless I missed one, bought a 2014 ram 1500 crew cab brand new ,first pick up truck and I absolutely love it 68,000 miles on it now no rust and she’s an absolute beast only had a couple of minor issues that were taken care of under warrantee and I wound up buying the lifetime Chrysler Carmax warranty bumper to bumper million miles or 100 years which ever comes first I looked at the Fords and Chevys they all have their pluses and minuses And can say that with all the technology that they come with today you’d be foolish to not get an extended warranty for these vehicles all it takes is one thing to go bad and that alone would be the cost of the warrantee for sure . I’ve driven this thing up and down the East Coast half a dozen times and is just as comfortable as any SUV I’ve ever owned living on Long Island is definitely an issue with rust so I do expect at some point to get rust on the vehicle. we all park at the marina at least the guys that are on the ocean or Bay are going to get that salty air blown all around our vehicles and for some reason all the municipalities on Long Island love to dump copious amounts of salt whether we have snow on the ground or not this past winter I can’t even tell you how much salt was dumped in anticipation of 1 to 2 inches of snow it would take weeks for the salt to wash away with any kind of rain it just in my opinion destroyed all the vehicles this past winter . I saw a couple of forums where It was recommended to use the rhino liner inside the wheel wells and at least 4 inches along the entire edges of the doors fenders and quarter panels it actually looked pretty good made the truck look tough

I have a 2011 GMC Sierra. I've taken great care of this truck, owned it since 2 years old. Last year both rear fenders started rusting mid-flare on both sides at nearly exactly the same time. Super disappointing.

I don't know how much longer I can stay a die-hard GM guy. It's getting harder and harder. This rusted out 8 year old truck just might do the trick though.
How could a 2 year old afford a truck? :)

Just traded my 2013 1500 Ram in on a 2018 2500 Ram a few weeks ago. My 2013 had to have the drivers side bed side replaced under warranty at 49,000 miles in 2017. Had a couple of bubbles start forming.

Love it!
Old school. The dealers don’t stock like that around here.
I’ve been leasing the vehicles my wife and I drive daily for years. No attachment to them. Three years and gone.
But I would consider buying a pickup in that configuration with a diesel and keeping it more years.

One of my coworkers here in Central New York has an older Silverado 2500 that was sprayed about 8" up all around. If it was a white truck, it'd probably look off, but the black spray on green doesn't look bad since the spray line is trim and straight. does seem to be effective on for rust and minor chip prevention.

You’re not kidding.

All recent F150 power plants have significant issues. The 5.0 many have catastrophic failures due to cylinder distortion. If yours sounds like a diesel you got it.

As for their EcoBoost. Sure, let’s put s tiny 3.5 or now 2.7 v6 and place two tiny turbos in front to inject air to make up power and torque. Problems everywhere.

Quite frankly any overhead variable valve train v8 is a bad idea.

Ford went down hill since their 1st gen 5.4 Tritons which were rock solid.

My next truck will have a conventional pushrod engine.

See Ford cam phasers, chain guides, etc for reference.

i would suggest you do a little research and actually drive the ecoboost engine trucks before you make a statement like this....you obviously have done neither....those 'tiny turbos' on the 'tiny 3.5L' ecoboost pump out just as much power and torque and more than many V8 engines....

Apparently they can make any color you want with the rhino liner

This is going to be a tough line to tow around these parts, Cliff. How many times have new boat shoppers asked "is X boat under powered with Y engine" and the collective CSR response is typically "nobody has ever complained about having too much engine", "go big or go home" or "I have too much HP, said no man ever". :)

I'm actually surprised I'm allowed to continue posting here with my choice to put a 3.5hp outboard on my dink that's rated for a 15hp. Sacrilege.

Mines a 2011, 1st Gen 3.5 ecoboost - runs great.

I have my doubts about tiny engines with power adders for heavy lifting. Would you want one of these in your boat ? There's a reason they don't do that. I like my engines large and simple, like in "detuned". Small engine with power adders tuned to the max = no room for error.

I suggest you get your facts straight. I have indeed not only driven the F150 3.5 and 2.7 EB, but also the 3.5 EB in the Expedition EL.
In all three vehicles I drove from Chicago to Melbourne Fl. 2200 miles round trip. Had each for 2-week periods.

In addition, a close friend is a tech at a Ford dealer. His direct hands on experience is more validating than my driving experience. He does not recommend any VVT engine, nor direct injection, and certainly not either of the EB engines.

The only recent engine he would purchase if he had to is the 5.0, which has a well written history of cylinder distortion.

Those are the facts.

I get a kick out of military grade this has been used for years to mean better which in the end all it means is the government hold a close spec when you build something for them .Military grade just means it meets spec nothing more not better or worse.

Cool Story.

I've owned a F150 SuperCrew 3.5 Ecoboost for 8 years and tow about 3.5 tons 2K miles every Summer to N. WI and back. Never had an issue. I'm at 109K miles. Although my drivers side seat heater went out.:(
