Ubiquity Bullet M2 vs PepLink Max BR1 Mini. Wan WiFi

I was out on the lake Friday and ran a couple speed test away from the covered dock. This was typical, and exceeded my expectations. I think having the Puma mounted close and the Mk2 in the arch is a winning combo.

I read about this plan on Seabits.com and tried to sign up. I was unable to get to a checkout online. Did you do it online or in store?? I'm a big fan of Tmobile lately after years with Verizon.
I was was able to do it on online. It did take a while to figure out the quirks in the website. You have to select certain options that are NOT well highlighted, then the "Continue" button will turn pink so you can proceed.

Here are a couple areas that tripped me up.

First, if bringing your own device you have to click in the red circle. Then you can check compatibility via entering an IMEI, or skip (at your own risk).

Once you start the checkout, you'll get this this screen. i got tripped up here. You have to select a new line (unless transferring one, enter your zip or area code, then press the search hourglass. THEN, it will show some phone numbers from which you can pick. I got tripped up because I thought it would assign a number later, and the screen doesn't say something helpful like "click to search for a number", or "hey dummy, press here if you want to buy our stuff".

Once your number is reserved you should be able to check out.

In a fun twist I got through the whole order process, waited 3 days to get a SIM card shipped, and eagerly ripped open the envelope....to find it empty. Yes, T Mobile shipped me an empty envelope with no SIM. I had to go up to a local store to explain and get a card. I also didn't get any email confirmations about my order an it took a couple calls to customer service to get it sorted. Then I tried to create an online T Mobile account, only to find that they send a text message to the phone number on the account as verification...which doesn't work on a data-only device.

I'm hoping the data service is good because so far the rest of it is pretty sub-par.

I switched from Verizon about a year ago, and the mainline phone data text has been very good. These data only plans I think they do begrudgingly...thats across the board.

@b_arrington When I first tried to get this going on a third line for the Link Zone I mentioned previously, the first tech support call set the whole thing up and did so completely wrong (on there end) forcing a second call, then learned about being in the wrong plan and they set me up with the fore mentioned 100GB plan. When the SIM arrived, put it in the Link Zone and nothing. I then made another call and they told me that you can't use a modem on that plan and need one of there other 50GB plans stating @$75/month. Thats when I gave up on t-mo for this. I have had there phone plans for 20+ yrs. and they are great for that.

I hope you have better luck than I did, please report back after you start using it for a while and let us know.

Dang. I’m going to be in transit then! Hopefully it will be recorded.

If you register they will send you the recording and slides.

Excellent, I registered last night. I'll be hanging out with Captain Rusty, making our way up the eastern seaboard.

Edit: I've had a couple friends ask to give updates on our trip progress. My new Peplink BR1 Mk2 can show it's location on a map - can this function be temporarily exposed in a public way?

That's awesome! Should be a very fun trip.

That's a good question, I know with their cloud service that can be done but unsure of any other way. Especially if it needs to be public. I know there are cloud service web sites that do this but they are subscription based like Peplinks service.

These easiest way to do that is to add a AIS transponder. Then there are a number of free websites that they can follow you on.

Thanks. I had that idea, too. However, I won't have time to install AIS before my trip starts.

I have a Vesper XB-8000 on my upgrade list. If I didn't already have a good VHF I'd consider the Vesper Cortex.

I installed the XB-8000 on my boat last year and love it. I have older helm electronics, so run Navionics on a tablet as a backup chart system. The XB has it's own Wifi connection, so I am able to connect my tablet to it and then the AIS contacts overlay right on to the chart. It saved my bacon last year when I was running in heavy fog, I was able to see traffic all around me (confirmed on radar) and I was able to steer clear of them. One cargo ship actually hailed me by name over VHF since he picked me up on AIS, he wanted to ensure that I had him in "sight" since I was crossing a shipping lane. Very cool upgrade and it adds to the safety factor.

I just added this over the winter, man this thing is cool. I even added the alarm out to the system monitor and that now alarms on anchor watch moves. Great device and their Anchor Watch app is pretty cool as well. I plan on letting that run on the boat tablet more peace of mind when anchored.

Download this poor man's AIS from your app store. I used this for years before finally adding AIS to the actual boat. Works great as long as you have cell service. This will then show up on Marine traffic https://www.marinetraffic.com/ and we can find you.

Amen to that... Skybolt set me back a boat buck+++ on this thread!!! LOL

Awe now hey, that was money well spent I think. How else are you going to check the lotto numbers on the boat in the Bahama's :)

A boat buck +++ is money well spent if the admiral is happy. We stress tested it last weekend with movie streaming and remote access to my home Plex server, and at the end of the weekend I asked her if she realized that there were no hiccups with any of the playback. Of course she didn't realize it until I pointed it out. o_O
