My 1981 260 Sundancer has 2 items flush mounted on the transom below the water line, one is a light the other is a 3 inch diameter, plastic item with about 18 or 20 (1/16") holes in it. It is flush mounted and appears to be original. Anyone know what it is?

Thanks

Sounds like a strainer for a livewell or possibly a washdown. What's on the other side of the transom? Follow the hose.

Will do. I've so busy with other things on the boa that I have not started to investigate. I have to look at every time I climb up and down the transom ladder so I can't ignore it so now it's time to investigate.

Thanks for your response Dennis.

Are you sure that one is a light? Sounds like the old style mercathode system to me. Got any pics?

I could be wrong on the light as well, I'll start chasing it also. My boat has a TR drive so has an inboard transmission so that and power steering etc. make it kind of difficult to see what is under all that. I have a mechanics scope so will start with that. I'll get some photos as well.

Thanks Mitch

At 38 years old and who knows how many previous owners, it's all just a guessing game at this point. But if you're not positive that the one item is a light, then a Mercathode puck system is probably the best guess. If you haven't yet done so, take a look at the link that Mitch provided - it has pictures of the system.
