Ok so I’m having a issue with my transmission. It won’t shift into neutral. It starts in forward and will shift to reverse but no neutral. Can anyone point me in a direction?

Cant say for sure i assume they are Borg Warner Velvet drives you checked the fluid level ?

Can you disconnect the shift cable and move the shift lever manually? BTW the shift lever has to shift thru the neutral position when shifting from forward to reverse and back.

Clarify it starts is forward. Are you saying that the engine is in gear when you start the engine? Like as in the Neutral safety switch isn't working?

Also what make model specifically?

Specifically, I’m unsure. 1988 Weekender twin inboards. Straight shafts. Yes, once it’s started the shaft is turning, there is no neutral. The safety switch is on my shifters at the helm.

I've had 2 velvet drive transmission that had the prop shafts turn slowly when in neutral when cold. In both cases the prop shafts would stop turning in neutral when they warmed up a little. The reason is the clutch plates drag when in neutral and it can be caused by shifting at high rpms and warping the clutch plates. in your case are both transmissions doing this? Is the shift lever in the neutral position when starting or in the forward position which indicates a problem with the neutral switch? Velvet drives are very simple, reliable units and are simple to rebuild when needed.
