Just got back from a really nice couple of days at Davis Park and the buzz was Watch Hill is going to close for the 2016 season! Supposedly the entire place is getting a face lift and all new bulkheads. This will turn Davis Park into a nightmare trying to find a slip as the buzz was many were going to get a season slip at Davis as it is sure to be pretty filled to capacity most weekends. Pretty crazy stuff. Also, Davis Park seems to be losing many of the bulkhead slips on the south side on both East and West sides. The reason explained to me was the electric was no good and was not to be replaced. Sounds like alot of political jargon going on. So to all, take advantage of this season as it sounds like major changes are on the way to many places in Fire Island over the next couple of seasons.

Good thing I just moved the boat West to be closer to Watch Hill and Davis!!!! I hope this is just rumor

I highly doubt its a rumor as Sailors Haven is set to open this month after a facelift. Now all attention will be turned to Watch Hill.

Watch hill is next on the renovation list. Only 3 years in the making . The Park service is running it so it will be over budget and way past the target date. They are trying not to loose the season next year but since they are NOT doing their due diligence and inspecting the infrastructure , costs over runs and unforeseen structural items are surely going to delay this . Oh and its not even out to bid yet ...

That's to say nothing about the jerk job that will surround electric service at Watch Hill.....if nothing changes and WH is managed as business as usual, the end result will be that the Park Service will turn the current, old, dilapidated third world cluster*&%$ marina into a brand new third world cluster*&%$ marina rather than what could be a first class destination. Someday take a ride up the Patchogue River to see the Park Services first class facilities, including new bulkhead, docks, electric and a BEAUTIFUL ferry terminal with air conditioning and bathrooms that are functional, clean and ADA compliant.....then you should ask the question why did the park Service spend that money on support facilities when the actual park is in such bad condition....

I took a ride down there yesterday and was impressed how good it looked. It would be nice if Watch Hill was done to that level. I've been going to WH since I was a kid and it pretty much looks exactly the same. My biggest complaint though is the green flies.

We cant even get a FING torn American flag replaced at the Ferry Dock. Brian, I thought Tommy was going to kill someone.

Mike, Youll be seing a lot of me next year pal !

Good news ,I found this post on the WH web site
Notice to visitors: There are currently no plans to close the Watch Hill marina for the 2015 or 2016 summer seasons. A project to upgrade the marina is in the development phase and will likely begin in the fall of 2016. When further information on marina closure becomes available, it will be posted on this page and under park alerts.

Interesting on the actual vs flater rate electric bill. They want to do away with the fixed cost electric fee (per day charge) to institute metered usage. I understand seasonal marinas making this switch, but for transient.....sheesh, good luck.

Ps I just recognized the dock you took that sign pic from

Thats funny......Are you two slips down from me?

I'll have to keep my eye on you guys as I idle up the river.

Watch hill wanted 1 more season of Brian paying so they could update the marina that's why they're waiting ....without him they're doomed...

No mention of the day slips in the article. Metered electric will never work . People aren't going to wait around to check out so the meter can get read. Just shows how clueless the park service is .
IF they don't electricify the days slips it just screams incompetence

I got this email today from The Friends Of Watch Hill:

"Our FOWH board members recently met with the National Park Service "NPS" to discuss the upcoming renovation. The NPS confirmed the Watch Hill Marina will be open this May (May 7, 2016).

The renovation is planned to begin mid-September 2016 and will include:
3,841 linear feet of bulkhead (in front of existing bulkhead),
new decking,
replacement of electrical systems and water lines, and
new electric stanchions
the marina configuration will remain the same
Funding sources include $3.49 million from the Federal Highway Administration, $1.5 million from the National Park Service Hurricane Sandy Relief and $3 million from the National Park Service Recreation.

As you know, Fire Island Concessions (Ken and Marybeth Stein) are aware of the project and will be able to serve customers through most of the season i.e., September 15th. The timing of completion of the renovation is not available at this time as the 2017 winter weather is unpredictable.

FOWH will of course update you as we receive further information from the NPS. Looking forward to another great season at Watch Hill!"
