My genny won't pump, so I assume it needs an impeller. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being worst) how hard is it?
I've done impellers on the motors so I know my way around a tool box.
Also, how the hell do you get the anode out without lifting the whole unit!

I have a 370DA so there's a little more room in my ER. My genset is located on the starboard side with the engine facing aft. In that position the pump is very accessible on the exposed side of the genset. I've install new impellers with the pump still mounted and with the pump removed. I find it an easier replacement than the impellers on the main engine pumps.

Be sure to lube up the new impeller during the install. One time I missed that step and the impeller burnt up on the initial start up.

Good luck.

I'm guessing you have a 4.5 genset it's easier to remove the whole pump assembly to replace the impeller

To get that pencil anode out of the heat exchanger, loosen the clamps that hold the tank, then you will be able to rotate it a little for better access.

OK, thanks for all the info.
Now how do i find the correct part number for the impeller. My book doesn't list it. I have a 4.5 KW BCGB. All I find is very confusing.

I have the 7.0K BCG. I've replaced just the impeller on the mounted pump and also removed the pump. With the pump removed you can ensure the gasket is lined up easier.

Hmm, yeah. I have that t-shirt. At least I had been smart enough to buy two impellers before being too dumb to lube the first one.

My Westerbeke uses a Johnson pump and impeller which is a whole lot cheaper than buying from my Westerbeck dealer....

I believe the Westerbeke pump is actually made by Johnson. Westerbeke part number 32617 = Johnson 10-35038-5E. However, both of those part number have been superseded by newer numbers. The data is available on the net. Westerbeke has a bulletin on the pump update. I have found some suppliers still carry the original part number.

Get used to the job. I've gone through a couple impellers in a few short years. And check that anode often. It will turn into crumbs and clog your heat exchanger in no time.
