Points last at least a year, but starting, running , and economy will improve with electronic ignition. You don't have to worry about dwell and point gap settings, you can use a readily available coil, spark plugs last much longer, etc. Lots of pluses and not any minuses.

Not necessarily, Harley davidson v twins do not. I looked at the lobes for the points and they are 180* apart on this particular one.
