What is normal amount of water in bilge? 400 fly

I’d walk away from that much water down there. Why is it coming in and why aren’t the pumps keeping up.

Thanks again to everyone for the great insight. I now have an idea of what to expect and it is not what I saw. I spoke with the dealership owner and he said they had not done their in house survey of the boat yet and the issue will be fixed prior to delivery which is supposed to be this Friday. I most defiantly will not accept the boat as is and I will want to know what the problem was. As this is my first inboard boat, I really appreciate the this forum and how everyone seems to be so helpful.
I would pay for my own survey by your own surveyor.

Yup, please consider an independent surveyor. I even ask my mechanic to take a look as well.

Your bilge should be dry, especially on a new boat. I had a few leaks on my 44 Sedan Bridge but eventually got fixed. Some where very hard to find. I would start by using a shop vac to get every drop out. Then see if the boat leaks when raining or washing. Then take it out on the water and see if it's coming in when the engines are running. The dealer will have to spend some time in the engine room and any other bilge area that has water in it. Some areas that could be an issue are things like show sumps that could overflow if there is water in the cabin bilge. A/C condensate line not draining into a sump box properly. In the engine room water could be getting into the hull side engine vents possibly when running if not sealed properly, loose hoses on engines/genny or other systems, rudder posts, shaft seals, leaking water/holding tank. I wouldn't accept a new boat with 5" of water in the bilge. The source has to be found by the dealer as this is a problem. My bilges are dry now and if there every is any water in them I know there is a problem.

I am about to take delivery of a new 400 fly. During our sea trial and poking around, I noticed what seemed to me as a large amount of water in the bilge. It was about 4-5 inches deep and the water was even visible in one of the forward hatches (floor of aft cabin). I asked the dealer about this and they said maybe it was because it had just been washed. This does not make sense to me as everything topside should drain overboard. That being said, I am coming from only owning outboard boats (Boston whaler, Grady white, Pursuit) so my bilge usually never had any water at all. What should I be expecting with regard to quantity of water in the bilge?
I like to be able to dust my bilge!

You see those little slots in the bottom of your bilge pump? That deep.

Thanks to everyone for all the info. I took delivery a couple of weeks ago and so far so good. I understand the amount of water that I saw in the bilge was way more than should have been there. That being said, my dealer absolutely acknowledged it and determined it was a leak with one of the connections in the fresh water system. They have fixed it and now there is just a few drops which I will be vacuuming up. Looking forward to learning all the systems and enjoying many a weekend in Catalina before our cruse down to Mexico.

Where you going in you going to keep it there for a year to keep from paying the taxes?

I recently purchased a 2005 Sea Ray Sedan Bridge, I had some of the same issues and have methodically worked through them, all resolved now. I had a fresh water leak on the manifold under the galley, the shower sump wasn't draining and one of raw water intakes was leaking. Many hours and some investment in new pumps and I think/ hope it's all sorted.
