7.4 Mercruiser w V drives
Hey Club Sea Ray,

I was at the marina working on winterizing the boat. I am doing to myself to save a small fortune. The marina said because my 7.4 Mercruisers are fuel injected I should create a mix of marvel mystery oil, engine stor, and a stabilizer and run each engine for 20 minutes.

Does anyone do this or do you just add a stabilizer to the gas and run the engines?

I do realize I have to run antifreeze through it etc.

Thanks for your help - it was a great season!

There is a mixture recommended by Mercury. Not sure if it applies to your engine...I think it does. It's gas, 2 stroke oil and stabilizer. Google Mercrusier fogging mixture and it will come up. In fact here is a link http://www.marinemechanic.com/merc/distributors/mercurymarine/sterndrive/foggingefi.pdf

this bulletin states all EFI amd MPI engines so yours are included.

To me, an easier way to do this is to put 2 oz of Stabil, 2 oz of 2-cycle oil, and balance gas into the fuel filter and run the engine at 12-1300rpms for 5 min.

Imhave cool fuel 3 so no spin on filter...but yes that would be easier.

Madifonzo - What is the difference between cool fuel and VST (not sure what the acronym is) models? Ok so I make the mixture, how do I get it from the gas can to the engine? Did you put a quick disconnect for your fuel line?

BBWHITEJR - I have a spin on filter - do you suggest dropping it down and putting in the mixture and running it? I don't have the other type of fuel filter.

Yes, this is the recommended method for a fuel injected motor. If carburetor like my 4.3, just stabilize the fuel in the tank, run it and spray fogging oil down the carburetor until it stalls. Reason you don't do this in fuel injected motors is 1. If MPI you can't and 2. If TBI the fogging spray tends to not be nice to the various sensors in the fuel system.

As others have suggested placing the mixture in the fuel filter will work. I disconnect the fuel line and fittings and replace with a threaded barb fitting then use a remote outboard fuel tank and fuel line. Slide it on the fitting and prime with primer bulb...was the engine starts its running off the remote tank. Either way, I think you have to disconnect the fuel with either method because you don't want to introduce non-mixed fuel during the process.

Thank you, thank you - added 2 ounces marvel mystery and 2 ounces of stabil. Put it in the fuel filter with the gas that was in there (once I was able to get the fuel filters off - because they were on so tight). Ran the engine for about 5 minutes...worked like a charm.

I did do the engines differently. I ran the first one on water to warm it up, then shut it down, dropped the fuel filter added the mixture. I then used the pink antifreeze and ran the engine. The second engine I ran it with water but had already dropped the filter and added the mixture. I think the second way worked better because I got more of the mixture in to the engine...all in all it went very well!

Thanks for all the suggestions!
