Has anyone done this? Iam looking at a Fusion Stereo system which has single CD player which plays MP3's, IPod connection and USB for a flash drive which is the way I want to use it. X number of hit songs all in one folder and random play is all I need.

One can order a wired remote which looks about the same as the current Clarion model installed on my boat, of course this means the six disc will no longer work, and I woud have to find some way to file the hole or modify the cabinet. Maybe make it into a MP3 CD holder? Or some type of glove box?

Anyway has anyone here replaced their wired remote? How much trouble was it?

Thanks

I went with a Pioneer single disc, ran a plug out for iphone/USB and replaced the changer too. The changer was a little small for the hole but mounted in the center and its not noticeable. The wired remote was the same size as the Clarion that came out - running the wire was easy. I can get model numbers if you want them - also can connect you to a good source to buy. I also changed out 4 speakers, sub and amp for JL Audio and addded 2 more JL speakers and another 10" sub and a dedicated mono amp (JL) for the sub. Let me know if I can help.

When I switched out my system last year, the helm remote cable ran through a conduit all the way back to the head unit, attached the new cable to the old and pulled it through all at once. It was a simple procedure. It took me longer to decide to drill through the dash to make the hole bigger for the new remote...I would guess that yours would be very similar.

I am considering the same thing for the same reasons. I also want aux inputs so I can connect one of my Directv receivers. I was looking @ a Poly Planar unit. I noticed that Clarion has a couple of decent units that will meet my needs. Ipod hook up, USB port, CD changer capabilities. What was interesting is the tech support told me they sell an adapter cable that would allow the new head unit to control the old cd changer. It just changes the round plug out of changer to a square plug to go into stereo. I would like to keep a changer in the event the Ipod crashes or I forget to bring it which is more likely.

I am interested in any information or model numbers you may have.

I am also very much interested in any information about the Clarion adapter where you can still use the six disc, CD changer.

Thanks

I am going to go with a Sony CDX-M60UI and the Sony wired remote RM-X60M.

I plugged in a flash drive yesterday with over 650 songs on it and hit shuffle. SWEET, just what I am looking for, so now I will have to figure out what to do with my current older Clarion system and XMD1 6-CD, once I change the system out.

The new system also has a single CD player which plays MP3 recorded CD's. I will make me about a half-dozen different themed CD's and keep on the boat, you know a romantic one for the ladies and amour' time.

That sounds good. Sorry I didnt get back to you sooner. I didn't get the pn on the adapter from the tech rep and didnt see your post until now...Best of luck with the new stereo. Just for the record the model stereo I'm looking at is the Clarion M309. It's approx 54 watts peak per channel, usb for the flash drive, ipod hook up, pre outs (6) for future amps and subs:smt038 ,front aux input, rear rca aux inputs and it 's close to the size of my current unit thus less remodeling! PS. It also has a single cd that plays all formats!

You know, you know? LOL If you get the time, take a look at this system, They are very similar in appearance and features.

Sony CDX-M60UI

The manual for this system shows it will also access external CD changers, no sure what connection may be needed thought to do this option.

I'm going with the M309 and the MW1 LCD display remote in the spring. Easy swap out for the XMD-1 plus Ipod controls on the new dash remote. Also get to ditch that outdated 6 disc changer.

I did the Sony 50 series, makes things alot easier than my old Clarion equipment. You can add a Sony changer with the Unilink control cables, you can also add more inputs, HD Radio tuners, etc, build the system with what you need. That was one of the reasons why I went with the Sony product.

Alpine sells a remote w/out the wiring. (you do need to buy there head unit) Also you can add a second or third remote on swimplatform or wherever. I wish I saw this when I was buying my system last year. a remote in the transom area would be nice escpecially without having to fish wires. Rf

I installed the new last summer Clarion head unit that plays dvd's (CMV1). Clarion required a new remote that they had issues with and I literally received it from west marine about a month ago. It has a USB plug and Aux input. I really like it because I can display movies on my chartplotters and the remote uses the standard 2" hole. The sound is pretty decent as well.

The unit I am looking at comes with an Infra red remote, but that would not do me much good from the helm area. My stereo is mounted behind closed cabinet doors, so unless I route infra red relays. I am just as well replacing the wired remote.

I installed the Fusion unit that takes any iPod into it like a cassette. Ran the cable for the remote by attaching it to the old remote cable and pulled it through to the dash (or maybe it was the other way around).

No need for the six disk changer now. I left it in place until I figure out what to do with it. I have a 160 GB iPod which holds all of my music (except the vinyl I haven't converted yet) with room to spare. With storage like that, who needs a disc changer? I've even thrown my iPhone into it with the phone running Pandora which also was very cool.
