Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 220

Maybe someone here can help me. . .

I left the key in the ignition turned to the setting left of the OFF setting. I guess it's the setting to keep the stereo and such running. Needless to say, I get down to the dock next day and hear that faint warning beep telling me that both my batteries are gone.

I replaced the batteries and tried to start the boat but I get nothing. No crank, no lights, no pump, nothing. She's dead!

I triple checked my battery connections and they are definitely right. I even connected my emergency jumper battery thing but even then I get no juice at all anywhere. It seems that even if she doesn't crank, I should get some power to something. But there is none anywhere.

I looked at the fuses in the fusebox next the stereo. They all seem to be for individual things like the pump, stereo, etc. and they all look fine.

Is there another MAIN fuse or something somewhere that I could have blown or something?

I am at a total loss. . .

Any help would be much appreciated!

Oh also, I got my subject line incorrect. My boat is a 220 - not a 230.

Make sure its in neutral-----Some times we over look the obvious>

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

Thanks for your quick ideas!

I tried the dead man switch and it's on. The gear is in neutral. I suspect that even if they were part of the issue, that would only explain why she won't crank. It still doesn't explain why I don't have power to anything like the bilge pump, stereo, lights, etc.

Even with the external emergency starter battery connected via jumper cable, I don't get power to anything. It seem like something is tripped between the batteries and the rest of the electrical system.

That's why I was wondering if there is some sort of master breaker/fuse or something that I could have blown.

Keep the ideas coming, maybe we can get there be way of elimination!

Thanks everyone, I truly appreciate it!

Fusible links mounted on the engine to the same terminal on the starter as the battery cable? Pull on them. If they feel like overcooked spaghetti...

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

I tried the battery selector switch. Same result with it on the #1, #2, and Both setting.

That wasn't it.

Also, I took the back panel off the from behind the cockpit to get to the back of the ignition lock. I make sure that none of the wires going to the ignition lock had come off. Everything looked fine back there.

FC3,

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I am not sure that I understand. My knowledge of engines is barely rudimentary at best! I wouldn't know what the starter looks like.

Are you saying that I should follow the cables that come from the battery towards the engine and see what the connection on the other end feels like?

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

Check if there are any breakers that have kicked off. I've seen mine do this, when I left the key switch in the wrong position, and ran the battery down. On my boat, there are 2 down in the back, near my power steering or trim pump , they're black and very small, maybe a 2x2 block, 1" high, with a small breaker switch on them.

you said a 230 sundeck, what year? (put your info in your signature please so we can better help you)

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

VTSeaRay,

Thanks for your idea. I did see two breakers back near the batteries. According to the manual, those by-pass the battery selector switch to give power to the bilge pump and the stereo memory even if the battery selector is set to None or OFF.

I will check them in the morning but I suspect that if one of these is blown, I still should have power to everything else or at least something else. Wouldn't you think? But in either case, I appreciate the idea and will definitely check that first thing tomorrow.

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

check the breaker that is right on top of the engine near the back.

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

Dumb question. Why did you put new batteries in it instead of just charging your current batteries. Since it is a 230SD they can't be that old?? Have you talked with with your dealer about it?

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

Westie,

I found a button red reset button back there. That thing doesn't seem to be a normal type breaker that you can "flip" back to on. It's just a push button. Pushing down on it seems to do nothing. It doesn't stay down or anything. Should it?

Chuck1,

Thanks for your post. Actually, my boat is a 2004 Sundeck 220 - not a 230! I had that wrong.

I took the batteries to the local store for testing to see if they could be recharged and they pronounced them dead.

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

From what you describe it doesn't sound like it has tripped. the only way to tell for sure what your issue is, is to get a meter out and start tracing the circuits that are not working.

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

any loose or not connected ground wires?

Two comments:
The faint beep does not mean both batteries are gone. It may have meant that the one battery that powered your accessories was low.

After you replaced the batteries is when you first noticed having no power. Did you check the replacement batteries to insure they are good and charged?

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

Another dumb question--- Did you remove the protective plastic covers from the post of the new batteries???

Re: Won't start - Sea Ray Sundeck 230

Does the 2004 have the ECM module like my 2003 does? It could have gotten fried somehow. I had a close lightning strike that fried the ECM. Mine would start but everything else was gone. the test button showed all the fuses were good. A replacement ECM corrected the problem.

this is an ECM module

You can see mine fried in the top center which I didn't see when looking at the module with the cover on.

I'm not sure when SR started using these, but maybe you're describing the ones I'm thinking of... these fuses are usually on the port side of the engine bay, near a bus bar/electrical connections. These fuses will have a red "arm" that will pop up when tripped - almost like a flag. If yours has one of those (or another similar device in that area), it sure sounds like that's your problem.
