Is this a “new to you” boat or have you owned it for a few years?

Maintenance history, do you have any?

Is there anything you’ve replaced I an attempt to fix this?

man....can't say. I think its a Mercruiser I/O. 5.60hp 260hp
The lower outdrive was repaired 3 years ago..hit a stump and broke it pretty good. Havent used it but 3 or 4 times in the last 2 summers. And it has done great. Single Owner since new.....just started this trouble out of the blue.

Owner since new.
Had Outdrive repaired 3 yrs ago by regional factory rebuilder and has done fine since. Just started this out of the blue

What RPM is your engine reaching? Does it rev fine in neutral, but bog down in gear? Does it rev in gear but you just aren't moving? Need answers to some of these questions before any of us can spew forth opinions.

Yes revs fine in neutral and reverse, fwd is boggin like old gas but will not get any rpms and seems like 4mph is a safe mode top speed or something.
I know very little about it but it has been well taken care of. Got an oil chg and fuel filter couple months ago and ran fine the same day. Next out was a month later and it started it then.

If you don't know the answers to these questions, then no offense, but you are not going to be able to fix it yourself. Just get a marine mechanic to look at it. Then, when you get his diagnosis, you can run it by the people on this forum and we can help you understand what is wrong and whether the mechanic's explanation makes sense.

That said, my guess is the shift cable is stretched or misadjusted. There is an ignition cutout that cuts the engine ignition as you shift from neutral to forward or reverse. It prevents shifting under power and helps the transmission clutches shift smoother. If the shift cable is not adjusted properly it could be leaving the ignition cutout engaged or partly engaged when in forward. But diagnosis over the internet with limited information is impossible.

Agreed and understood...thats exactly what I'm hoping for yall to help me keep em honest because I will be taking it to a shop I'm notvery familiar with.
Not an Alpha outdrive.
Your cable diagnosis makes a ton of sense!
Thanks
Will do.

Have you verified that nothing is wrapped around the props?

It's not a safe/limp mode.

If it’s not an alpha drive, then we can assume it’s a Bravo 3.

Bravo 3 drives do not have a shift interrupt switch, that’s only found on alpha applications.

drive oil level?
drive oil condition?
what type of drive oil used?
bad shift cable adjustment
bad cone clutch
