ZF Hurth HSW 800V1 Manual

Just use hydraulic hose with a 1/2" NPT X 45˚ or 90˚ end swedged on by the hose shop. If you don't trust me on the 1/2", take one off one weekend and match the plug at the hydraulic store during the week and you'll be ready by the next weekend. It is easy and a lot cheaper that inventing a complicated solution. Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to do this with a hard brass pipe and fittings. The vibration from 3116/3126 engines.......and by diesel standards they are very smooth running engines.......will cause the pipe fittings to crack and break at the threads. The first fitting at the transmission needs to be the hydraulic hose. It attentuates the vibration so the rest of your invention can be about anything suitable for hot hydraulic oil.

That’s a great idea.
It might come down to doing something like that for the port motor, but I’d still rather know that there is a closed valve at the transmission itself.
Hopefully Fumoto will have a solution with a 90 degree L.
If not, I’ll be heading to a shop that makes up the hydraulic hoses to see what kind of setup they can assemble.
No problem using a Fumoto valve for the starboard motor. They have one on their website with the right threads and a straight hose nipple and there is plenty of room for it on that side.

Have you purchased these yet? Curious. Im at the point I have to come up with the drain set up. I've got everything else ready to go to change the ATF and add the pressure/temp senders and get the stuck zinc out of the starboard transmission cooler!

There is a Parker store on the way to the boat and would certainly be able to build be a hose assembly.

Frank:

Question for you. Can you confirm the ATF pan IS or IS NOT pressurized?

I was under the impression it is NOT pressurized, and that drain hose can be anything impervious to ATF.

There is a vent check atop the gear casing. Usually the unit should be at a slightly negative pressure when oil is cold; you should hear a slight "hiss" when you remove the dip stick. The suction tube for the gear oil pump is at the bottom of the sump; the sump is never at a positive pressure.

TTmott.

Both of mine have a slight hiss when I check fluid levels, so vents seem to be functional. Thanks for confirming sump is not pressurized.

No, I haven’t ordered them yet. Everything got sidetracked with the holidays.

I understand...I've been side tracked for 6 weeks now!

Between the holidays and the weather (it’s been either bitter cold or raining heavily) here I’m way behind on things I wanted to get done on the boat.

I can confirm these are indeed 1/2" NPT! I pulled one of the plugs, and matched it up at the local ACE. Thanks Frank!

Now to build a hose assembly to pump the ATF out of the bottom...its a messy job this time around.

Here is my mock up. EZ-Oil 202 (1/2" -14 NPT) with a section of 5/8" huse caped off with 5/8" hose barb and a cap.

I order 2' of reinforced oil hose to make the final assembly.

I have one HSW 800 and ZF 85 also. Does the ZF filter kit (3312199031) also work for the Hurth?

If th e filter is all metal, then they are designed to be washed in solvent, dried out and re-used. You don't need to replace them unless they are damaged.

The ZF-85-IV is a bolt-in replacement for the HSW-800-IV. They are the same transmission except VF improved a design weakness in the intermediate shaft bearings/support.

Is that a "yes" for they both use the same filter???

I believe you will find the HSW800 and ZF85 the same gear except the ZF85 has some improvements.

Old thread but I needed this information so I figured I would update. The link above no longer works, but I located a new link.

Also, you can just message me and I can send you the document. The PDF is too big to upload.
