Find the leak and dry out the boat. Moisture is the genesis for mildew and musty cabin odors. If you have a Maxum, I'm not going to be any help as I have no idea how they are constructed/assembled.

Do you have moisture trapped somewhere? Sometimes a leaky shower sump can cause a funky smell. Some boat manufacturers (and early Sea Rays), did not bother with a shower sump and just drained into an open sump under the cabin steps which was a disaster for those of us not smell challenged. The first step would be removing any moisture problems and cleaning. Then Febreeze? Any number of air fresheners will work once you eliminate the source.

(Think carefully, did the same number of passengers disembark your vessel that have come aboard? Hopefully someone didn't get lost in those huge canverns we call storage areas and expire :)

Another thing to do is open up a couple of windows before leaving the boat. This will provide plenty of cross ventilation, thus avoiding the possibility of mold and mildew growing. You can also stratigically place silica gel packs around the boat to help with moisture.

Once you've found and stopped moisture problems and still have the mildew smell, run the temp setting on your thermostat all the way up and maybe put an electric heater in the cabin; mildew and mold can be killed by heat. If all else fails, rent a small ozone generator and run it for a few days inside the cabin.

Get a " classic aire " unit, it will remove all odors in a few days, They are $3-400, But they work. Available on line.

Re: Musky mildew smell in cabin

We had this problem with my 250 Da, so, we started storing it (on the trailer) with the cabin door open and cockpit cover on. This kept rain out, but allowed for great air circulation. After some kids came on and had a party in our cabin, we began leaving the mid cabin berth portal open, cabin door closed and locked, and head portal open. The head drained any rain water, and having the two portals open allowed for sufficient air flow to stop the smell and stop the formation of the black spots on the ceiling liner.

Cheapest easyest way to go is stop by your local grocery store and pick up some "Damp Rid". change it out/drain it every week or so and it should help stop the musty smell and the mildew.
