    Outdrive Oil Leak

After replacing the impeller and refilling with oil, I noticed that oil is leaking from the small water weep hole. My brother damaged the the nub on the rubber ring that went on the main shaft. I plan to replace that, but I'd also like to replace all of the oil seals as well. Can anyone point me toward the proper kit? At this point I'm figuring I should pull the whole outdrive to grease the joints as well. Will I need to pull the whole unit to replace the seals? I'm wondering how much an alpha weighs. Can two men lift and carry one? If I'm going to own this boat, I have to learn how to perform these maintenance tasks. Thank you for any help. I'd be lost without the fine people here at CSR.

Ok cool, we can handle that. What would cause the oil leak? Am I on the right track, replacing the oil seals? Thank you

    Re: Outdrive Oil Leak

I chased on oil leak this spring. Finally turned out it was the seal where the shift shaft enters the bottom of the outdrive (commonly called the foot). I bought a seal kit for about $50 on line and replaced them all. Not too bad although I had to make a tool to remove the main shaft bearing carrier out of a piece of pipe. You can replace all the seals without removing the entire drive, just the foot, same as if you were doing the water pump. The Sierra part number for the seal kit (for an alpha) is 18-2652.

    Re: Outdrive Oil Leak

Best of luck to you. I'm a new owner, only had my boat about 8 months. During the winter I replaced my water pump and housing. When I filled it, it started leaking out out of the weep hole. Turned out I used the wrong water pump housing which caused oil to leak around the shaft and out the weep hole. If I had pulled the lower outdrive off and filled it with oil at the same time I would have been able to see where the leak was comming from. I used one of the wood stand in a previous post and it worked great especially with one person.

Thank you Monaco. I'm pretty sure we got the correct impeller housing but we didn't replace the lower half, which may have a bad seal. I might fill the lower unit while its off the boat and see what happens. After pulling it apart today, I'm fairly certain that the leak is in the lower unit. So I didn't buy the upper seal kit I'm going to start with the shift shaft bushing and the impeller housing base. If that doesn't fix it, I'll do the upper seals.
