    V-Berth custom mattress

Has anyone purchased a custom mattress for their v-berth that they would highly recommend? I have a bad back and need a good one, I don't care how much it costs. I tried a Tufted Topper which is an improvement, but I need something even better. Thanks.

We had the same issue with our mattress. I contacted Knox Foam out of Knoxville Tn and they made us a custom memory foam mattress that is great. Three inches of base then 2" of 5 lb and 1" of 4lb for a total of a 6 inch thick mattress. I worked with Jody. Made a template of the top and bottom of the mattress, sent it by UPS to them and they had me a new one in about 10- 14 days. That was in March of 2008, here is their number 865-329-3051

    Re: V-Berth custom mattress

Man, what great timing for this thread! I spent my first night on our "new to us" 320DA on Friday night and had a crick in my neck the next morning. That "mattress" isn't going to get the job done and I intended to ask the group for ideas. Well, here they are.

Question to Mood Swings: When you made that template, how did you do it? I was thinking that maybe I'd use several sheets of poster board taped together and then cut to match the outline of the V berth

    Thanks!

    flarepoman,

I too have back issues so I went to the web site. Which mattress did you purchase (there are way too many choices)? How would you describe your matress, soft, firm, hard? How thick is it? Did you use the ACM measurement kit? Did you get custom sheets? If so, do you like them?

    Re: V-Berth custom mattress

Since the mattress is two pieces I got some 3' wide construction paper and taped them to gether to get a 5ft 10" width. I laid the old mattress on top of the paper and traced it out to get the bottom size. Then took another two pieces and taped them together. I turned the mattresss over to get the top size. Mine are bevelled so that is why I needed the top and bottom. You can get tubes for mailing the template at UPS stores. Good Luck. I just tried to call Knox Foam to order some pillows and they are out of business.

Here is what we did we took our cushions off the boat went to a store that sells custom drapes and cloth. They had the high density foam in stock that also had the correct cutting tolls to cut the foam to fit. Thay cut the foam and made removeable covers with zippers. It was the best thing we ever did. you can take the covers off and take them home and wash them.

Best bet is to go to a matress store and see if you like it. It took a few nights to get to like it. Now I love it. Mine is 9" thick. The company can have sheets made for you. They also will give you the name of that company to have spares made. It was not cheap but whats your back worth??

I got lucky and found one that another 300DA owner was selling. Wife and I agree that this was the single best aftermarket investment I made for the boat. I have back problems and quickly found that the stock SR foam is.......crap! I tried the foam mattress toppers but there is no comparing it to a real innerspring mattress. The company is Handcraft mattress company. They can custom design it to fit your needs. On the 300DA it needed a hinge so you can open the storage locker and access the bottom storage area. Expensive, but you said that is not a problem. Highly recommend them. http://www.hmcwest.com/Home/index.html#Scene_1
